Mississippi offers bettors a wide range of opportunities, but very few of them are online. With online casino gambling prohibited in the state, Mississippi bettors can only play slots or table games at social casinos, which offer a variety of online games for prizes or amusement, with no money changing hands.
While state law doesn’t specifically mention online casino gambling, the Mississippi Gaming Commission, which regulates gambling in the state, makes its position clear, stating on its website: “Internet gambling is illegal under state law.’’ The commission also warns about wagering with unlicensed and offshore casino outlets, saying “it is illegal to place bets from Mississippi with these businesses.’’ Therefore, brands offering promotions similar to NJ online casino bonuses won't be available until the state regulates online gambling.
Several of the state’s casinos offer their own branded online social casinos, which offer free casino gambling play with virtual coins for comps and prizes. A growing number of national online social casinos, such as Chumba, which can be played on their respective websites or Facebook apps, are also available. Gambling.com’s top-rated social casinos are listed above.
Difficult to say, with later more likely than sooner. The state relies heavily on the tax revenue from its more than two-dozen casinos and there seems to be little legislative appetite to add best online casinos to the mix.
Mississippi is home to 26 commercial casinos and three more on tribal lands. The biggest cluster of casinos is located on the Gulf Coast. The complete list of Mississippi casinos (hours of operation and number of available games are subject to change due to social distancing restrictions):

Many of the major national casino operators already own or manage casinos in the state, including MGM Resorts (Beau Rivage, Gold Strike), Caesars Entertainment (Harrah’s Gulf Coast, Horseshoe Tunica) and Penn National Gaming (Hollywood Gulf Coast, Hollywood Tunica, 1st Jackpot, Boomtown, Ameristar Vicksburg). All are experienced online operators and could make the transition quickly if Mississippi were to allow online casino gambling. Same with other operators in the state, including Boyd Gaming and Hard Rock.
If online casino gambling is approved, mobile apps will become an essential part of the operation. Casino games app allows bettors to wager on their mobile devices from anywhere inside the state, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Generally, the apps are available for both Android and iOS operating systems and can be downloaded free of charge on the casino website or the App Store.
Online casinos offer nearly all of the same casino games found at traditional casinos, and can be played anytime on your computer or mobile device.
Online sites: Online slots are adjusted to fit your screen, with newer games offering a mix of special effects and animation. Online slots often offer better payback percentages than casino slots.
Online poker: In addition to video poker, cash games and daily internet poker tournaments against other players are offered for a variety of stakes and buy-ins.
Lottery: The Mississippi State Lottery is relatively new, with the first sale of scratch-off games in November 2019. The state participates in multi-state jackpot games such as Mega Millions and Powerball. Lottery tickets are sold only at retail locations and cannot be purchased online.
Online roulette: Automated version uses an electronic random number generator instead of a physical wheel.
Online blackjack: Most popular table game at both retail and online casinos. Online version allows for lower minimum bets, a wider variety of blackjack games, and moves at a quicker pace.
Live dealer: Live dealer games offer a more social experience with an actual person dealing from a studio and the game streamed to your computer or mobile device. However, the availability of live dealer games varies widely even in regulated states.
States with online casino gaming provide a variety of options for deposits and withdrawals to your online account. The most popular:
E-wallets: E-wallets such as PayPal and Neteller allow you to quickly transfer funds in or out of your online casino account whenever your request for low fees.
Prepaid card: Prepaid cards such as Play+, which was created specifically for this purpose, are an excellent option. Players can fund their Play+ card with a credit card or from a bank account and use it to both deposit and withdraw funds from numerous casinos. Money can then be accessed at participating ATMs.
Credit/debit card: Convenient option with deposits processed quickly. Note that some banks will not approve legal gambling transaction, and those that do generally don’t allow credit card withdrawals. You can also expect transactions to carry a fee from your card issuer.
ACH/bank transfer: Works well for deposits and a favored method for withdrawals. Funds are transferred directly from your bank account to online gambling account or vice versa. Transactions can take several days to process.
PayNearMe: Use cash to make a deposit at a Mississippi 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy or Family Dollar location. No credit card or bank account needed.
The same casino bonuses online casino players receive in other states, including:
No deposit online casino bonus: Promotion for new customers that pays bonus money into your account just for signing up. Usually in the $20-$30 range and you may have to risk the bonus money at least one time before redeeming.
Bonus match: Make an initial deposit into your account and the online operator will match that amount up to 100% or more. Comes with more stringent playthrough requirements than a no deposit bonus. Be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully as some casino games may not be eligible.
Free spins: Promo appealing to slot players as an incentive to try new games or as a reward for previous play.
Reload bonus: Sometimes offered to existing or inactive players whose accounts may be low or depleted.
The “Mississippi Miracle” is no exaggeration.
Like most other Southern states, Mississippi enacted strict gambling bans in the late 1800s that remained largely unchanged for the better part of the next century. Then Mississippi broke through the ban in a development that was at the time shocking for not just the region but the nation.
Mississippi was and still is dominated by conservative religious, cultural and political conditions which have historically been largely averse to any form of gambling. But seeking new ways to generate revenues in a struggling state economy, officials began steadily gaining support for legal gambling.
Starting with the success of New Jersey’s commercial casinos in the 1970s and federally recognized Native American tribes on tribal lands in the 1980s, Mississippi increasingly saw gambling as a means to attract tourists from across the nation. Lawmakers overcame gambling opponents to support modern riverboat casinos and eventually land-based facilities.
Decades later, it’s still shocking that Mississippi was just the third state in the nation with commercial casinos. Regional neighbors such as Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee still don’t have any commercial gaming facilities within their borders.
Mississippi’s casino market grew and contracted over the years, eventually settling into a dependable industry that contributes billions in economic impact each year. The 2019 approval for a state lottery, which had been delayed for years largely over fears it would cannibalize casino revenues, will only further Mississippi’s gaming revenues.
The next wave of gambling developments, namely online casino gaming and online sports betting Mississippi, will likely be tougher sells in the state. But even now, its proactive embrace of gambling has made Mississippi the top gaming state in the region and to this day one of the largest markets in the country. So, for those looking for something similar to New Jersey online casino apps, there's hope.
Only on Daily Fantasy Sports and social casino games. Casino gambling, pari-mutuel wagering and nearly all sports betting is available only by in-person wagering.
Bettors must be 21 or older for both sports betting and casino games.
Online casino gambling for real money is not legal in Mississippi. The only legal online casino offers are for social casinos, which allow bettors to play free online casino games for prizes or amusement. If you see an offer from a real-money site, it is undoubtedly an offshore casino that is unregulated and not recommended.
At more than two dozen licensed casinos across the state and at three tribal casinos.
Under IRS regulations, all gambling winnings are taxable, and the federal tax owed will depend on your tax bracket. Winnings are also subject to a 3% state income tax.
