Despite its name, Creepy Castle is a playful 3D video slot featuring some cute critters who go bump in the night. Developer NextGen has taken inspiration from Monsters Inc. with its character design and bubblegum style, filling its macabre and spine-chilling castle with relatively not-so-scary nasties.
NextGen’s 2017 title was built with mobile devices in mind, and the game’s colors pop right out of smart device screens. It’s also available to play on regular desktop versions of your favorite online casinos as well. You can jump between the two, meaning you can continue to explore the Creepy Castle even when you’re on the go.
Although NextGen has set its spine-tingling slot in a spooky castle, it has crafted it knowing that players are using mobiles and tablets more and more. Creepy Castle can be played on both Android- and iOS-powered smart devices, so you don’t need to be at home to spin the monsters around the reels.
The game’s art style is its biggest draw, with a weird and wonderful mix of monsters with eyes, fangs and tentacles to try and land. There’s also a selection of traditional card symbols including 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, but they've all been put through the monster mash, featuring googly eyes and razor-sharp teeth. As with other slot games, these traditional symbols are the ones that appear most often and pay out the lowest. A full reel of 9’s will win 20 times the bet, while the cyclops-designed ‘A’ will net you 150 times the wager, if it doesn’t bite you first.
There are four unique monsters to try and catch, named Ballie, Bato, Tally and Squido. Each of which comes with its own Wild variant as well. The highest-paying of these is the three-eyed and yellow-furred critter, who pays out 350 times the bet for a full reel. As well as featuring on the reels, they also stand around the reel board alongside the slimy and gooey buttons. On the left-hand side the coin bet and bet per line is displayed, while on the right you have a giant green slimy play button, plus a pink auto-play function as well.
Each of the four unique monsters inhabiting Creepy Castle comes with its own Wild symbol as well. Any of the regular icons can mutate into these with a puff of smoke. One or all four of these critters can turn into their Wild variant on any spin within the main game. The Monster Wilds can be substituted for any of the other symbols except for the Castle icon.
The Creepy Castle logo acts as the game’s Scatter symbol. If you land three, four or five more of these anywhere on the reels, you will be rewarded with between 9 and 15 Creepy Free Spins depending on how many Scatters are present. During the free spins, you can also open up doors to reveal the monsters hiding. If you find one, all of their symbols transform into Monster Wilds for the entire duration of the Creepy Free Spins session.
In addition to the Monster Wilds, the game also sports a normal Wild symbol with the word written on a pile of slime. The standard Wild is the highest-paying symbol, and if you land a full payline of Wilds it will net you 500 times the wager.

The Creepy Castle online slot is less about sending shivers down your spine and more about having fun with some friendly creatures in the dark and gloom, successfully combining the tropes of the horror genre with a colorful slot game. The animated graphics and character conception show a real flair for detail that's often lacking in online video slots. The Monster Wilds and the special features they bring should be enough for most slot players, although the it could have benefited from another bonus round or two to keep the gameplay ticking over.
