South Dakota residents voted to expand their gambling options by approving a sports betting referendum in November 2020. The vote paved the way for sportsbooks in Deadwood and at Native American casinos to go live. Late 2021 was a potential target date for legal sports betting to become a reality after Gov. Kristi Noem signed a sports betting bill into law on March 23, 2021. On September 9th, 2021, sports betting in Deadwood went live. South Dakotans can enjoy sports betting in numerous retail locations.
South Dakota is home to nearly two dozen casinos in the former gold rush town of Deadwood, along with nine tribal casinos located across the state. In addition, bars and clubs are permitted to host small stakes games and offer a limited number of video lottery terminals. Other gambling options include pari-mutuel wagering and a state lottery.
The state that is home to Mount Rushmore offers almost no online gambling options. But voters overwhelmingly approved of sports betting South Dakota sites, including online, though, mobile bets would have to be placed inside the casinos. The good news is that sports betting is now fully live within Deadwood city limits.
All forms of online gambling in the state are prohibited with the exception of pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing platforms such as TVG and TwinSpires. The only exception is online sports betting through Deadwood casinos which went live in September 2021.
Additionally, betting on sports teams is unavailable. The ban forbids betting on in-state college teams. Still, it's legal to place bets on college teams from states other than South Dakota.
Social casinos are legal and can be accessed on the Internet or through online apps. Sites such as Chumba casino, LuckyLand and WinStar offer free slots and table games for prizes or entertainment, with no real money changing hands.
Playing for real money at offshore-based online casinos and offshore betting sites is not recommended. The sites attempt to circumvent state and federal laws, provide no regulation and should be avoided.
Legalizing online casinos is not a priority. Neither the state nor the tribes have expressed serious interest. Before seeing any promotions that resemble NJ online casino bonuses, South Dakota players will have to remain patient, or travel to another state to have fun playing casino games.
Nearly two dozen commercial casinos are located in Deadwood, in addition to tribal casinos across the state. Casinos are permitted to offer slot machines, poker and a variety of table games. State law caps the maximum wager at $1,000 — a significant increase from the $5 maximum set when casinos were legalized in 1989. The maximum bet was raised to $100 in 2000, and to $1,000 in 2012.
Here is a look at South Dakota’s Deadwood and tribal casinos. Operating hours and available games subject to change due to COVID-19 restrictions.

There are no plans for any South Dakota commercial or tribal casinos to offer online casino gambling. South Dakota residents can play online at social casinos, which offer free online slots, poker and table games in which players can win prizes.
If and when South Dakota approves online casino gambling, mobile casino apps will be an integral part of the rollout process.
The apps launched by online casino operators would allow a South Dakota player to place wagers on a mobile device 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from anywhere inside the state. The apps are free to download, compatible with both Apple or Android operating systems and available on the casino websites or through the App Store.
Among the games launched in states that allow online gambling:
Lottery: South Dakota regulations do not permit the sale of lottery tickets online. The South Dakota Lottery does have a mobile app which allows users to scan tickets and access information about jackpots and promotions.
Online Slots: Most of the slot machines at your favorite casino are available online, including games with progressive jackpots. Players can choose lower betting limits and easily switch between online casinos.
Online Poker: Texas Hold’em cash games and tournament play are available in several states. Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware share online poker player pools, increasing the number of available players on poker sites in those states.
Roulette: The online version uses a random number generator instead of a physical wheel. Choose the variation (European, French, American, etc.) you prefer.
Online Blackjack: The most popular table game offers lower minimum bets online, several variations (Blackjack Switch, Spanish 21, etc.) and no waiting for a table.
Live Dealer: To add a social element, some states offer a variety of live dealer table games. An actual person deals the game from a remote studio, with the action streamed to your computer or mobile device. Players can chat with the dealer and other players at the table.
Below are the most common payment options in states that allow online casino gambling. Deposits are often immediate, withdrawals generally take longer.
Credit/debit card: Most utilized deposit option. Some financial institutions may not process gambling transactions as a matter of policy, though that number continues to decline. Withdrawals via credit card are generally not permitted.
E-wallets: Popular accounts such as PayPal and Neteller are easy to set up and allow players to move money between accounts for low fees. Convenient for deposits and withdrawals.
Play+/Prepaid cards: Play+ was created for this purpose and is a breeze to use. You can fund your Play+ card with a credit card or bank account, then use the card to both deposit and withdraw you’re your online casino account. Funds can be accessed from the Play+ card at an ATM. Prepaid cards are available through a wide variety of retailers. Several online casinos offer their own branded prepaid card, which can be used for deposits and withdrawals.
Bank transfer/wire transfer: Establishes an electronic connection between your bank and online gambling account. Wire transfers, which do not require a hold on funds, process more quickly than bank transfers.
PayNearMe: Deposit-only option in which cash is transferred to your online account by scanning a barcode at a participating local 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy or Family Dollar store.
The best casino bonuses found in other states include:
Deposit match: Make an initial deposit and your casino operator will match that amount up to 100%. Usually includes a playthrough requirement in which the bonus money must be wagered a set number of times before it can be fully redeemed. Be sure to read the terms and conditions.
Welcome bonus: Receive a small online casino free signup bonus no deposit required just for signing up for an online account.
Mobile bonus: Offered to account holders who play their games on mobile devices.
Game-specific bonuses: Bonuses restricted to a specific slot title or table game.
Freerolls: Casino operator provides free entry (no buy-in required) to various tournaments.
Free spins no deposit casino bonuses: Great for slot players, you get free spins on select machines.
South Dakota has a strong history of gambling that dates all the way back to the state's gold rush days. Much of the legislation regarding the current wave of gambling regulations actually came from the 1980s, as shown in the following timeline.
Online casino gambling is not legal. Online sports betting will only be legal inside Deadwood casinos, which will be activated probably in late 2021.
Bettors must be 21 or older to wager at the casinos in Deadwood, at tribal casinos or to play VLTs. The minimum age is 18 for pari-mutuel wagering, bingo and lottery games.
Commercial casinos in South Dakota are restricted to Deadwood city limits. To receive a license, applicants must be approved by the South Dakota Commission on Gaming. Tribal casinos licenses are limited to federally recognized Native American tribes that sign a gambling compact with the state.
Based on other states, there is no residency requirement and an online account can be set up from anywhere. But bettors will need to be physically located inside South Dakota to place a legal wager.
Some offers may be from offshore-based online casino or sports betting websites and should be avoided. Offshore sites are not regulated and offer no consumer safeguards or protections. Other offers may be from legal social casinos, which offer free online games for prizes or entertainment, with no real money changing hands.
Commercial and tribal casinos offer slots, a variety of table games and poker. The state also permits video lottery terminals (VLTs), pari-mutuel wagering, bingo and lottery.
At nearly two dozen casinos in Deadwood; nine tribal casinos around the state; bars and taverns which offer a limited number of VLTs; and the Triple Crown Casino off-track betting facility in North Sioux City.
Only inside Deadwood casinos, some time late in 2021. Legislation to allow statewide online sports betting died in committee during the 2021 session.
The South Dakota Commission on Gaming regulates all wagering in Deadwood as well as pari-mutuel wagering.
If you are playing on a site that is properly licensed and regulated by the appropriate South Dakota agency, online gambling will be safe. The agency will be charged with ensuring the integrity of all online games and equipment.
With no state income tax, South Dakota does not tax gambling winnings. However, all gambling winnings are subject to federal tax, according to the IRS.
