Poker Game Selection at BetMGM

There are both practice play money tables and real money games galore at BetMGM. From Texas Hold’em cash games to Pot Limit Omaha poker tournaments, there’s something for every preference and bankroll.

Cash Games

Cash game traffic will vary depending on your state. If you download the BetMGM Poker app and log in from New Jersey, there will be around 200 cash game players at peak times. For example, in June 2021, the BetMGM Online Series played out in Michigan. The seven-day festival featured 10 MTTs with a combined guarantee of $275,000. A year later, the BetMGM poker Championship ran from June to July 2022.

The BetMGM Poker Championship

BetMGM Poker entered a new stage in its U.S. evolution in June when it hosted a $1 million guaranteed tournament at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The inaugural $3,500 live event attracted 343 players to beat its guarantee and give the winner, Joey Weissman, a $224,236 payday.

The BetMGM Poker Championship at ARIA had a $3,500 buy-in no limit hold 'em tournament with a $1 million guaranteed prize pool. It kicked off with a $600 buy-in for the BetMGM Poker Mystery Bounty and through a rolling schedule of daily qualifiers and weekly satellites, BetMGM Poker awarded prize packages to players from each US online poker market. Including buy-in for the BetMGM Poker Championship where travel expenses were paid for, including a five-night stay at ARIA.

There were also online satellites across BetMGM US that ran right up to the main event. Note that the 2022 World Series of Poker was also running simultaneously so it was easy for players to jump in to one or the other if they busted the other one. The success of that event across this operator's network has led to the creation of a bigger and better online series, according to BetMGM’s Director of Poker, Luke Staudenmaier. It's safe to assume there will be another annual event for BetMGM poker championship among more live and online BetMGM events.

Summer Classic Series

July 2022 also saw the introduction of the Summer Classic Series, another headline poker offering, which ran online across all three BetMGM poker states: New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The “Classic” featured 25 events over eight days with more than $540k in guaranteed winnings. Luke Staudenmaier, Director of Poker at BetMGM said in a news release that they were "excited to follow-up on the momentum we gathered in Las Vegas through [the] online event, the Summer Classic [...] which spotlights America’s pastime, features buy-in levels and game variants for all players.” The schedule largely featured PKO tournaments and bounties, turbos and freezeouts.

World Poker Tour Satellites (WPT)

BetMGM also shines thanks to its link with the WPT. Partypoker and the WPT are partners, and this relationship extends to BetMGM. As well as official World Poker Tour satellites, BetMGM Poker is equipped to host online WPT championship events.

New BetMGM Poker State Championships launching September 2022

The BetMGM Poker State Championships offers players in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan the chance to win a share of $2 million in guaranteed prize money.

“This has been a transformational year for BetMGM Poker. The momentum we’ve experienced in the past three months has inspired us to push for new heights,” Staudenmaier said in a press release. Those new heights will see BetMGM Poker host its first state championships in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Each individual championship is open to players within state lines, but the schedules align with each other.

That means players in all three states have virtually identical experiences. The only difference will be that players and prize pools are ring-fenced. However, there are 26 events to participate in, with buy-ins ranging from $100 to $2,500 and qualifiers starting from just $5. Players can also claim early registration rewards by entering MTTs before the cards start to fly.

The schedule highlights include a $500 No Limit Hold’em event before the first Progressive Knockout tournament takes place the following day. Also on the docket is a $2,500 high roller and a selection of daily Phase 1 events that conclude on the final day of the series. Topping the bill, as expected, is a $1,000 championship event taking place over the final two days of the series. The 8-Max No Limit Hold’em tournament has six-figure guarantees in all three states.

Online Poker Game Variations

As we’ve already said in this BetMGM Poker review, the three main variants you can play are No Limit and Fixed Limit Hold’em, as well as Pot Limit Omaha.

Players in the Garden State also have access to Limit Seven Card Stud tables. However, even though this is the biggest of all MGM’s online poker sites, these games don’t get a lot of traffic. It would be nice to see a few more cash games and MTT options added to this poker app. But if there’s no one willing to ante up for anything outside of Hold’em and Omaha, there isn’t much point adding Draw or Mixed Games.

Competition Level and Traffic
