When: Sunday 10 November, 8:30pm IST
Where: St George’s Park, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth)
Watch: Sports 18, JioCinema
Best Odds: South Africa 2.2, India 1.66
Long time readers of our India cricket blog would know we identified the Indian side as very strong outsiders and they suitably delivered with a performance befitting of world champions, despite less than half of their first XI technically being so.
Now as the teams head to Gqeberha for the second of four T20Is, the odds have been reversed with cricket betting sites as the tourists go into the next game as the favourites.
South Africa are expected to recall opening bat Reeza Hendricks after he missed the first match with illness, whilst India are likely to retain their bowling attack since none of the quicks bowled four overs.
We're anticipating that Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs and Aiden Markram will take their game to the next level in Gqeberha, where they all play their SA20 cricket for Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
The Numbers That Matter
- South Africa won their last three T20Is in Gqeberha
- The all-time T20 run rate in Gqeberha (intl and domestic) is 7.36rpo
- Rinku Singh made 68* in Gqeberha last year
- Marco Jansen to India's last top seven in all cricket: 2-160 from 14.3 overs
Stubbs to step up at St George's
Buoyed by his Delhi Capitals retention last week, 24-year-old Tristan Stubbs will be hoping to show more cricket fans his potential in this series and we'll be backing him to make a meaningful contribution at his SA20 home ground.
Indian bookmakers have set an over/under mark of 19.5 runs for Stubbs following his 11 in Durban, which seems a very fair total considering he scores 20+ runs in exactly half of his T20I innings (13 of 26) and averages 19 in all T20s against India’s 1st T20I bowling attack.
But St George’s Park is where he more often than not produces a better than average innings, which on the balance of probabilities should get him over the line here.
Stubbs averages 37 in all T20s (domestic and international) in Gqeberha compared with 31 across South Africa as a whole, and this is where he has produced four of his six half-centuries in the 20-over format.
Prediction: Tristan Stubbs over 19.5 runs - 1.83 @ Rajabets Sports
Varun to spin a web at St George’s
The best figures of the first T20I came from fringe Indian leg-break bowler Varun Chakravarthy, who after missing the last two T20 World Cups is using this series to make his case for inclusion in 2026.
He carried forward his excellent form from the home series against Bangladesh to have now taken 2+ wickets in three of his last four T20Is, and the way in which he matches up against South Africa’s top and middle order makes the even money price for another 2+ wicket haul very appealing.
The most encouraging aspect of his performance in Durban is that all three of his wickets were high calibre batters (Rickelton, Klaasen, Miller) at a decisive point in the match where South Africa were 86/3 at the start of the 12th over and not without a slim chance.
Varun has now dismissed South Africa’s last top seven batters eight times in all T20s, averaging 20 runs and 13 balls per wicket, so he’s an excellent chance to have another successful outing here.
Prediction: Varun Chakravarthy to take 2+ wickets - 2.00 @ Rajabets Sports
Riding the wave of South Africa’s Kingsmead enforcer
Forgive us for wishing to back the best bowlers of each team from Friday night’s T20I to do so again on Sunday, but Gerald Coetzee’s outing also marries up with his own outstanding franchise T20 history in Gqeberha.
He took three wickets with three different variations, and in the same manner as Varun, they were all from the opposition top and middle order which is generally a strong indication of a well-performing bowler.
Coetzee also recorded a game-best 3-32 against India at this very venue just last year, dismissing Tilak Varma and Arshdeep Singh as well as Ravindra Jadeja.
That performance accounted for three of the 11 T20 wickets he has collected at St George’s Park, which come at an average of 17 runs and 12 balls per wicket.
So on that basis, it will take only an average performance from him to give our followers another profitable day out!
Prediction: Gerald Coetzee to take 2+ wickets - 2.37 @ Rajabets Sports
