Doctor Who Odds: Longest-Standing Mystery To Be Answered In Christmas Special
Doctor Who fans have a festive special to look forward to over the Christmas period, but a recent comment by screenwriter Steven Moffat has led to some increased speculation on betting sites.
The festive episode, entitled 'Joy to the World', will introduce Nicola Coughlan's character Joy, who is the latest companion of Ncuti Gatwa's titular Time Lord character following Ruby Sunday's (Millie Gibson) departure.
It will be set in a "time hotel", which allows the Doctor and Joy to head to the past - including World War II and Everest Base Camp in the 1950s - and the future, including the year 4202.
As well as that, Whovians are to discover the answer to one of life's 'longest-standing' mysteries.
Joy to the World writer Moffat told Radio Times magazine: "This year, the Doctor will tell you the answer to that question you’ve been asking since you were a small child.
"The solution to the longest-standing mystery in, not merely the Doctor Who universe, but the universe as a whole. Watch on Christmas Day!"
But what could it be?
Nativity Who?
Some Who super-fans are convinced Moffat's quote relates to the Nativity, and have speculated that the 'time hotel' trying to fill rooms over the festive period could be a link to the "no room at the inn" part of the festive tale.
In May, showrunner Russell T Davies teased the series could head to Bethlehem for a Christmas special one day.
Speaking about a potential Doctor Who visit to Bethlehem, he told The Times newspaper: "Oh my God. Absolutely, that’s the great Christmas special waiting to happen. I know.
"It’s funny, we’ve talked about it ... give us time ... We’d do that with a bit of respect and fun."
Could Villengard, an old enemy of the Doctor, pop up in the upcoming festive episode?
It was revealed in a recent teaser for the Christmas special that Villengard are attempting to grow their own star, using star seeds, which could impact the whole of Earth.
A recent clip of the festive episode, released to mark charity telethon Children in Need, showed the Doctor and Joy discovering Villengard's evil plan and some fans are convinced that the star seed will be the answer to the big mystery.
One fan wrote on X: "I'll call it now. The star seed will end up being the star of Bethlehem!"
It's 10/11 on betting apps for the Star Seed to be the star of Bethlehem, but will that be the big mystery answered?
Doctor Who Indeed
Some believe viewers will finally find out the Doctor's real name in the Christmas special.
It's 4/1 that happens, but it does seem unlikely, because it would irk many a Whovian due to the Time Lord's moniker being a well-guarded secret.
One fan wrote on X: "Is it his name? I don't think we should ever learn it. (sic)"
Another posted: "If it's his name, we should never, NEVER know it, like his origins, but the TC storyline ruined that. (sic)"
However, in the 2017 Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time, the Time Lord gives some advice to himself and his future self, including "never tell anyone your name".
Doctor Who Odds: Which Longest-Standing Mystery To Be Answered In Christmas Special 2024
Mystery | Odds | Probability |
Star Seed To Be Star Of Bethlehem | 10/11 | 52.4% |
Where Does A Locked Hotel Room Door Go | 2/1 | 33.3% |
The Doctor's Name | 4/1 | 20% |
The Origin Of The Universe | 9/2 | 18.2% |
How Santa Claus Fits Down Every Chimney | 5/1 | 16.7% |
The Meaning Of Life | 6/1 | 14.3% |

In Peter Capaldi's final outing as the Twelfth Doctor, the character said: "Never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never ever eat pears ... remember hate is always foolish and love is always wise.
"And never tell anyone your name. No one would understand it anyway. Except, children. Children can hear it.
"Sometimes, if their hearts are in the right place, and the stars are too. Children can hear your name ... Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind."
These words were written by Moffat himself.
At the time, it was the last Doctor Who story to be penned and produced by Moffat after he had served as chief writer and executive producer, after replacing Davies in 2010.
So it would be a surprise if the origin of the Doctor's name was revealed this Christmas.
Hotel Room Door Mystery
Moffat and Davies may not want to risk the wrath of Whovian traditionalists and Christians over the festive period.
As a result, the great mystery the screenwriter has hinted at could be one of those that people wonder about in everyday life - such as how does Santa Claus fit down every chimney in the world?
Where does that one locked room in a hotel room actually lead to? Or, what came first, the chicken or the egg?
Should it end up being the hotel door query, which is 2/1, then it might be "revealed" that a locked room in a hotel, or a connecting door in a hotel, is in fact where a time travel device is stored.
This would, of course, be a fictional tale, but tie in nicely with the upcoming Who Christmas special episode.
Whatever the mystery, Moffat's recent comment has led to increased anticipation ahead of the Doctor Who Christmas special.
