15:00 Newbury – Rohaan – 1pt @ 11/2

Rohaan has been a super horse for David Evans and although he hasn’t been operating at his best this season, there were more signs of life at Ascot last time. He has a top record there but needs a sixth furlong to be at his best and was lining up over the minimum on that occasion. Added to that, he is quite dependent on the pace not holding up and those nearer the front were at an advantage.

There was enough encouragement in how he finished it out to suggest that he’s on the way back towards something like his best and he should be the one to beat if all goes to plan. I’m not completely certain on the pace makeup this time but Cold Case and Diligent Harry are drawn beside him and can inject a proper tempo. It’s a very competitive race but it’ll be disappointing if he’s not heavily involved.

15:05 Newmarket – Mokaatil – 1pt @ 11/1

Mokaatil is probably more suited to 5f but wasn’t disgraced in a 0-95 at Nottingham last time when third behind Juan Les Pins. The winner subsequently placed in the Wokingham and it’s safe to say that there’s nothing of that calibre lining up in opposition today! Having been dropped a pound, Ian Williams’ charge is running in a 0-80 for the first time and that’s going to make life easier for him.

The nature of Newmarket’s track won’t be a bother and he’s tactically versatile enough to take up any position in the field. He is an 8-year-old now, so the old powers likely don’t exist, but three of his last five wins came when dropping to a mark of 82 and I just get the suspicion that he’s building up towards a bigger performance soon. 11/1 looks to be at least a few points on the large side, maybe even more.
