14:45 Beverley – Ravenglass – 1pt @ 13/2

It’s tough to know how Ravenglass will react to wearing a visor for the first time, especially as he can overdo it during his races on occasions, but his half-sister gained her sole success in blinkers and it’s not impossible that the headgear could iron out some of his quirks. If it does, there’s no doubting that he’s handicapped to do something now dropped back to 67; the mark he defied at Thirsk last August.

This season started off promisingly with two third placed finishes off 71, then he dropped his level the last twice at Hamilton. The first came in a 0-90, which he always unlikely to be capable of running to his best in, and then the second was over the extended 1m 1f. I backed him that day but he was ridden to get the trip and never got into it properly, only closing up a touch late on in the piece.

It’s possible he has lost his form and will require more assistance from the assessors to get back into the winners’ enclosure, but this is a grade he shouldn’t have a problem with and dropping back to an extended 7f on a stiff track may be what’s needed. He moves really well when he’s operating at his best and finds for pressure, so if things pan out from a pace perspective then he must have a chance.

19:15 Newbury – Splendent – 2pts @ 4/1

Splendent has been on my radar for a while and I backed him at Haydock four runs ago. Luck mid-race wasn’t forthcoming as he got hampered and that was that. He won next time out at Windsor when stepped up to almost a mile-and-a-half, taking an age to actually go past the runner-up. There’s no doubting a few resilience issues are in place but the horse he beat is quite capable on that ground.

His next run at York is the one that adds the most hope for today, as he finished third behind Kihavah and Vega Sicilia. The first mentioned has won twice since, including off 12lbs higher a few days ago, whilst the second had blinkers on next time and scooted in at Goodwood. Splendent was close up to them and three-lengths clear of the remainder, so I have no doubt he’s still on a favourable mark.

I’m not sure the 1m 6f at Nottingham on rapid ground was in his favour last time out and he also wore cheekpieces for the first time. They are quickly removed and may not have had the desired effect. He’ll appreciate returning to 1m 4f, the level of today’s opposition is not that high and an apprentice removes 7lbs. If the horse consents to put it all in once more, he’ll be tough to beat here.
