15:20 Carlisle – Devasboy – 1pt e/w @ 33/1
Devasboy has got some pretty awful form figures this season, bar one glimmer of hope, but excuses are in place. Last time at Beverley, he was very slow to stride and ended up detached in a race where the pace won out, which explains why he could never get involved. Before that at Chester, he had been well-supported but raced on the most chewed up part of the track after another slow start.
I didn’t think his Ascot run in a 0-95 was all bad and that followed the spin that would give some sort of encouragement when he finished second at Windsor over a mile on heavy ground. It hasn’t thrown up any winners but plenty of them have run solid races in defeat and the first horse home was clearly on a very good mark. Devasboy, due to his form afterwards, is running off 4lbs lower today.
Ben Curtis taking over in the saddle again from an inexperienced apprentice is a positive and hopefully he will be able to coax the horse into exiting the stalls a shade quicker. Rain won’t ruin his chance either, unlike with some of the others in the field, and it wouldn’t take much improvement on the Windsor form to be a threat to all. He’s a high risk bet but is also a massive price, so I’ll play each-way.

15:50 Carlisle – Tilsitt – 1pt e/w @ 12/1
Tilsitt is a smooth mover when he’s on song and appeared to be well on the way back towards last season’s best when third at Ayr a couple of weeks ago. He couldn’t pick up the enterprisingly-ridden Garden Oasis on the run to the line but again travelled strongly and was a major player coming into the closing stages. He couldn’t find any extra but the rapid ground may have contributed to that.
A stiffer test will do no harm, especially as there should be a strong pace materialising here. That will put his cruising speed to better use and any rain won’t be a problem to him. He has previous in this race also, finishing fourth last season when 3lbs higher in the weights and that was despite the pace holding up far better than he’d care for. In an ideal world, they go hard here and fall into a hole!
He’s another who’ll have the benefit of Ben Curtis on board (first time up) and this, on paper at least, looks like the most optimal scenario the horse has been presented with this season. Of course, plenty can change mid-race and go against you, but there’s lots to like on paper. The market has cottoned on to his chance already but he’s 12/1 best-price (11/1 generally) with 5 places paid and that still appeals.
16:20 Carlisle – Jewel Maker – 1pt e/w @ 20/1
I’m going to take a chance on Jewel Maker again. I fancied him to run a big race at York eleven days ago but that couldn’t have panned out much worse as the pace was poor (106.5% finishing speed) and those at the front weren’t stopping, with the winner making all. Only the talented Tropez Power made any proper inroads into the speed, finishing second, but he too was massively inconvenienced.
The trip today is over two-furlongs longer, which will give the horse more time to get organised, and as long as there are no non-runners, we should have an end-to-end gallop. The quicker they go, the better his chance and his last success came at Haydock (1m 2f) when the pace was frenetic (95.9% finishing speed) and he blasted through late on to score by more than a couple of lengths.
He’s actually 4lbs lower in the weights now, which is a huge help, and Sean Kirrane is returning to remove his claim. He was booked for both of last season’s victories and clearly knows how to get the most out of this fellow. Any excess of rain would complicate things but he does have form on a testing surface, for all that he’s better when it’s harder underfoot. If all goes to plan, he can go very well.
