14:25 Sandown – Baltimore Boy – 1pt e/w @ 28/1

Baltimore Boy will need some rain to hit the track if he’s to have a right chance of getting involved but there are showers forecast before racing and hopefully they’ll materialise. The unexposed 4-year-old raced here on a quicker surface a few weeks ago and it was of no use to him, as he could do little more than plug on in the closing stages having always looked to be going quicker than he cared for.

His previous run at Ascot (on good ground) when fourth to Chasing Aphrodite was very solid, beaten just a couple of lengths despite sitting further back than ideal. He was apprentice-ridden as well and got rather “winged” at the back of the field, instead of slipstreaming other runners, and I see reasons to upgrade that effort. If he’s at that level again and all goes to plan in-running, his price is very big.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:15 Haydock – Toshizou – 1pt @ 11/1

Regardless of the rain, Toshizou shouldn’t mind the underfoot conditions as long as it doesn’t get exceptionally deep and it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on over a mile-and-a-half for the first time. I backed him earlier in the season when he was running over a bare mile at Newmarket and he finished strongly from his sit towards the back, something he tends to do more often than not.

He again caught the eye over 1m 2f at Epsom last time, never positioned to be in with a proper chance but flashing home inside the final furlong to grab fourth behind Cadillac. Stretching out another quarter-mile will really test his stamina reserves but he shapes as if it could work out for him and I’ll take a chance at double-figures. He’s definitely capable of a big run off a mark of 90, granted luck.

16:15 Sandown – Moktasaab – 1pt e/w @ 11/1

Moktasaab was a flop at Chelmsford last time out but he had a wide trip after suffering some interference in the early stages and it's a run to write off altogether. Granted, it was disappointing to see him so far below his true level but he’ll be happier returned to turf and is now 5lbs lower in the weights compared to what he started off at Newmarket in May (was well-supported for that run).

As one who has got a Timeform squiggle on a few occasions, it’s hard to trust him at the best of times but the visor worn for the first time at Chelmsford is retained and it’s not conclusive yet that it won’t help him in the closing stages. His penultimate start at York yielded a good performance, beaten just over a length, and a similar run from a 3lb lower mark must put him bang in the mix against these.

16:25 Haydock – Mount Athos – 1pt @ 8/1

Mount Athos is very talented but I’m not sure his connections were overly wise in their decision to drop him back into a sprint at Newcastle last week. It was a Group 3, so he was up against it on ratings anyway, but despite being a front-runner he does look like an out-and-out 7f performer. On top of that, he tried to set the tempo into a headwind and couldn’t show anything close to his form.

Turning out again quickly will either work well or backfire, but he should be fitter now following his first spin in ten weeks and getting back to 7f on a turning track will help matters. Some pace pressure from Gweedore and Liamarty Dreams adds a fly into the ointment but if Neil Callan can make things work from a tactical point of view, I’m certain he’s on a horse who should go very well off 103.
