Tom Lee's Panel Tips For This Week

The first weekend of October and perhaps the right time to play it safe, stick in a banker or two sit back, relying on the likes of Bolton at home to low scorers Shrewsbury, buoyant Exeter as they entertain struggling Cambridge, or lively Wycombe as they take on a pretty ragged looking Crawley.

At relatively cramped odds all three ought to do the business, but desperate teams can throw up odd results on their travels, and more importantly, let me pose this question. Isn't responsible punting also about risk, reward, entertainment, fun and adventure?

If your answer tallies with mine, read on for a blockbuster 10/1 double with football betting sites.

Plymouth Argyle Vs Blackburn Rovers, Saturday, 3pm

Leg one comes in the far south west, Plymouth Argyle's consistently sold out Home Park the venue for their Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers.

Whisper it quietly, but down in Devon a much maligned Wayne Rooney is seeing his latest managerial stint develop rather nicely.

I was at Turf Moor to see first hand how his vastly improved Argyle pushed highly-rated Burnley all the way in a tight game on Tuesday night, eventually succumbing 1-0 in an encounter where the hosts had to resort to bringing on defensive reinforcements and time wasting late on, such was the pressure applied by the visitors.

The Rooney factor has enabled the 2023 League One champions to cling on to key talent such as star men Morgan Whittaker and Bali Mumba, but also attract significant quality such as keeper Dan Grimshaw signed from Blackpool, current Hungarian international defender Kornél Szűcs, plus tricky winger Mo Cissoko.

All three have made an immediate impact, confident Grimshaw and his excellent distribution replacing the departed Michael Cooper, Szűcs instantly forming a bedrock central defensive partnership alongside the ace Lewis Gibson, Cissoko scoring twice off the bench to win man of the match in last week's epic 3-1 victory against Luton Town.

There's also no question Rooney's team are attractive to watch. Both sides have scored in three of their four home league encounters this term, including explosive late drama in both a 3-2 success against league leaders Sunderland, then less than a fortnight later the aforementioned Luton scalp.

Outcomes such as those strongly suggest Home Park is once again becoming a far away fortress, a venue where Argyle and their fervent Green Army rip into teams with zero respect for pedigree, league position or recent Premier League status.

So, what of Blackburn? Down to sixth from a recent third position in the table following their dispiriting 3-0 collapse at Coventry on Tuesday night, Rovers almost certainly won't be relishing this particular journey.

Plymouth away represents a whopping 305-mile trip for John Eustace's side, to a ground where last September they surrendered by three goals to nil.

Their four wins so far this season have all come at Ewood Park, and on the road they look a far less accomplished prospect.

Rooney's men do tend to pour it on and leave gaps at the back, so it would be zero surprise to see Blackburn score, but on their own patch it's Plymouth who can register a third high-scoring league win on the bounce.

Argyle are already an attractive price simply to win the game, but the way to maximise gains is to back them in the 'Match result, both teams to score' market, where  you can get 9/2 with betting apps

Sheffield United Vs Luton, Saturday 3pm

If that teaser comes off, it's another man with Argyle in his veins we'll be relying on as Sheffield United new boy Michael Cooper attempts to keep a sixth consecutive clean sheet since joining them, the South Yorkshire men entertain unconvincing Luton Town.

The Blades secured a coup when prising Cooper away from his roots shortly before the transfer window slammed shut, the fee believed to be something in the region of an initial bargain £2m.

The highly-rated stopper hasn't even blinked, conceding a solitary strike away from home on his debut against Norwich back in August, but subsequently keeping the door firmly shut in games against Watford, Hull, Derby, Portsmouth and Swansea.

Thanks to those heroics his still unbeaten side are up to third and only two points off top spot.

For their part, Luton have been dismal, seemingly suffering the mother of all hangovers since relegation from the top flight was rubber stamped back in the spring.

A hefty 13 goals conceded in eight games sees them languishing in 20th position.

At Evens with William Hill it's high-flying Sheffield United who look too good to miss.
