Women's Olympic Football: Three Tips From The Panel For Wednesday's Matches

Women's Olympic Football Predictions

The women’s football tournament at the Paris Olympics resumes on Wednesday - and it is crunch time for many of the 12 teams involved.

Only USA and Spain have booked their places in the knockout stage with a game to spare, so there is plenty still to play for in France.

Indeed, none of the dozen sides taking part this summer have been eliminated yet, so we should be in for a dramatical final day of the group phase.

The odds offered by the best betting sites show that there are no foregone conclusions at this stage.

Gambling.com’s experts on The Panel have checked out the latest odds on three of Wednesday’s games and picked out a tip for each of them.

Australia Vs USA (6pm)

USA are already through to the knockout phase and they are almost certainly guaranteed top spot in Group B thanks to their goal difference.

They have been impressive up to now, beating Zambia 3-0 on matchday one before thumping Germany 4-1 last time out, and they are 4/9 with new betting sites to advance with a 100% record.

Emma Hayes is going for gold in her first tournament at the helm.

Australia were disappointing in a 3-0 defeat by Germany in their first outing of the summer, but they got back on track with an incredible 6-5 triumph over Zambia on matchday two.

That was one of the best games in the history of the Olympics, as Australia came from 5-2 down to win in Nice.

The nature of that victory has given the Matildas some momentum to take into this game, but a clash with USA will be a stern examination of their credentials.

Indeed, even if Hayes opts to rest one or two of her star women, the Americans will almost certainly prove too strong here.

There is an abundance of attacking firepower within the USA ranks and Australia’s defence has been unconvincing up to now. We like the chances of Hayes’ team scoring either side of half-time in this one.

Brazil Vs Spain (4pm)

Spain’s senior men side won the European Championship earlier this month and the younger Olympics team is now going for gold in France.

So too are the women, who have already booked their place in the quarter-finals ahead of matchday three.

That is despite the fact Spain, joint favourites with USA on betting apps to win the tournament, were drawn in the so-called group of death alongside Japan, Brazil and Nigeria.

The reigning world champions, who beat England in the final of the World Cup last year, kicked off their campaign this summer with a 2-1 victory over Japan. A 1-0 defeat of Nigeria last time out sent Spain through, thus taking the pressure off this meeting with the Brazilians.

Yet Spain will not be putting their feet up on Wednesday as top spot is not yet guaranteed.

Despite their tally of six points, it is still possible that Spain could finish as low as third (but they would be guaranteed to go through as one of the two best third-place finishers). Do not expect Spain to make wholesale changes to their starting XI.

A defeat would leave Brazil vulnerable to an early exit, even though it could still be enough to advance in third.

They will not want to leave anything to chance, however, which is why this could be an entertaining encounter as both teams seek to qualify for the quarters in style.

New Zealand Vs France (8pm)

France’s 2-1 loss to holders Canada in their last game means the hosts are not yet certain of a place in the knockout stage. Group A remains wide open heading into Wednesday’s round of matches, with all four teams still in with a chance of progressing.

Realistically, though, New Zealand are no longer in contention and are a best-priced 20/1 with 10bet to spring a huge surprise by beating the French.

Defeats by Canada (1-2) and Colombia (0-2) have left them on the brink of an early exit - and their upcoming meeting with France could be their stiffest test yet.

Les Bleus, just 2/13 with football betting sites to win on Wednesday, are looking to shake off the tag of ‘nearly women’ that has followed them around in recent years.

Claiming gold this summer would confirm France’s status as a major force in the women’s international game, and we expect them to go through to the knockouts with a resounding win here.

For those of you with free bets it may pay dividends to back the hosts to win by three goals or more.
