As the game of basketball expands globally, so too does the popularity of the sport in Europe. And there isn’t a more competitive or talented league in the world outside of the NBA than EuroLeague.
As basketball betting expands globally, so too does the popularity of the sport in Europe. And there isn’t a more competitive or talented league in the world outside of the NBA than EuroLeague.
The 16-team league has churned out dozens of young NBA talents and also employed significant former NBA veterans in years past, creating a unique variety of talents and skill sets. And, of course, the game itself.
Slower paced but more technical and team-oriented than its bigger brother in North America, EuroLeague relies on coaching, bench depth and tactical execution that makes for fun at top New Jersey sportsbooks and top Pennsylvania sportsbooks.
EuroLeague’s 30-game regular-season schedule and postseason include standard game point spreads , moneylines and over-under point totals. If Real Madrid is hosting CSKA Moscow and are -350 to win the contest outright, a bettor would need to place $350 on Real Madrid to win $100. If oddsmakers put CSKA Moscow at +280 to win the game, a wager of $100 would mean a $280 win if CSKA Moscow was victorious.
Game spreads are typically somewhere between -105 and -115 to wager on. If FC Bayern Munich is -7.5 against the spread against Olympiacos B.C. (who then would be +7.5) and both wagers are -115 to bet, a $115 bet would net $100 if the team a bettor wagered on covered the spread.
Over-under point totals follow the same methodology as point spreads, with bettors wagering on the total amount of points the two teams will combine to score.
While oddsmakers will take this into account, it’s important to check two schedules when considering Euroleague spreads, moneylines and over-under point totals.
EuroLeague is made up of 16 teams from different leagues across the continent. The EuroLeague schedule (October through May) coincides with each team’s other league schedule. So just because a team has not played a EuroLeague game in three days does not mean they’re more rested than a team that hasn’t played a EuroLeague game in two days.
Always check the team’s home league schedule.
EuroLeague games consist of four, 10-minute quarters. Past that, less star power, slower pace and additional passing make for generally lower scoring games. That doesn’t mean the quality is decreased, only that scoring can be tougher to come by.
It could also, in a sense, make it more difficult for teams to come back from deficits. Then again, 3-point shooting is a trademark of the league and teams go deeper on their benches, keeping fresh legs on the court at all times.
Oddsmakers will take this all into account when setting over-under point totals, but it’s something to consider. It also means player propositions for point totals will be lower.
Assess the whole team. Stars exist in EuroLeague, but they’re few and far between when compared to the NBA, or even college basketball. It’s not enough to lean toward the team with the best player. It’s a far more even playing field with more preparation time from coaches that have a larger influence on the game.
Consider team stats over individual stats, and look to see which teams possess top-to-bottom strength and a balanced roster.
Remember the slower, more tactical game? That means taking care of the basketball and fewer risks. Given that the playing field is more evened, execution can be the difference maker more often than in other leagues.
This means teams that take care of the ball, and thus have more scoring possessions, are at an even greater advantage. Conversely, strong defensive teams that can force opponents into mistakes have an advantage.
This is true for every league, but even more so in a league that emphasizes taking care of the ball and valuing each possession – especially in a 40-minute game.
