The 2022 Cheez-It Bowl is preparing for its 32nd edition of the game and the 21st in Orlando. Before 2020, the bowl was known as the Champ Sports Bowl or Tangerine Bowl but gained a new title sponsor with Cheez-It.

The bowl typically features teams from the Big 12 and the ACC, with the Oklahoma Sooners and Florida State Seminoles taking part for the 2022 iteration of the game. Both big-name programs will look to finish on a positive to close the year.

Cheez-It Bowl 2022 Teams and News

The Cheez-It Bowl began in 1990 as the Blockbuster Bowl. It has undergone nine name changes in its 32 years of existence.

Florida State has won this game three times. In the first game, the Seminoles were ranked sixth in the country, the highest-ranked team to ever play in the game.

They might not be that high this year, but the match-up with Oklahoma should be an interesting one for the bettors. Make sure to check out the best sports betting site and shop for the best odds available before you get in on the betting action!

Betting on Oklahoma at the Cheez-It Bowl

Oklahoma (6-6) is looking to avoid its first losing season since 1998. After Lincoln Riley left for Southern California, Brent Venables was hired as coach in hopes of fixing the team’s defensive issues. But the former Clemson defensive coordinator struggled to amend Oklahoma’s defensive woes, with the Sooners ranking 98th in points allowed (29.6).

Mobile quarterbacks have given the Sooners issues all season, which could be a problem when the team faces Florida State’s Jordan Travis. When going up against quarterbacks who pose a threat in the run game, Oklahoma allowed 41 points to Kansas State, 55 to TCU, 42 versus Kansas and 48 against Texas Tech.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel returns to Orlando where he previously led UCF’s offense before transferring to become a Sooner. Gabriel is coming off his best game of the season, completing 28 of 40 passes for 449 yards and six touchdowns in the overtime win over Texas Tech. He has 29 scores, including five on the ground.

The team will be without offensive lineman Wanya Morris, and Anton Harrison, in addition to running back Eric Gray, who have decided to enter the NFL Draft and sit out the bowl game. Gray is the team’s top back, rushing for at least 100 yards in eight of 12 games, finishing with 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per attempt.

The Sooners are currently +7.5-point underdogs and +250 on the moneyline with the DraftKings sportsbook.

Betting on Florida State at the Cheez-It Bowl

Florida State (9-3) drew headlines on the opening weekend of the season when the Seminoles topped LSU 24-23 when the Tigers missed an extra point with no time left. The Seminoles’ best stretch came at the end, with the team closing the year on a five-game winning streak. But the run of victories came after a three-game skid where Florida State fell to three ranked teams: Wake Forest, NC State and Clemson.

The biggest improvement for Florida State this season came with its defense. Last season the team allowed 26.5 points per contest but has cut that down to 19.7 for 2022. Florida State held Miami and Syracuse to just three points each in two of its most dominant defensive showings.

Travis’ offensive versatility could pose issues for Oklahoma’s defense. Travis has gained 471 yards and seven touchdowns as a runner. His seven scores tied for the third-most in the ACC, and his 7.6 yards per carry led all quarterbacks in the Power Five with at least 25 rush attempts. Of Travis’ rush attempts, 62% of them came on designed quarterback runs.

As a passer, Travis has thrown for 2,796 yards and 22 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Johnny Wilson is the team’s top receiver, averaging 19.9 yards per catch (35-695), while Trey Benson finished with 983 yards rushing (6.8) and nine touchdowns.

Florida State is -278 on the moneyline with the BetRivers sportsbook and a -7.5-point favorite over Oklahoma.

Who Won the Cheez-It Bowl in the Past

The Cheez-It Bowl has changed its name over the years. You may have followed the bowl since it was called the Blockbuster Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl or Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl.

However, it became the Cheez-It Bowl in 2020 following the sign-on of a new title sponsor. Whether you’re a fan of cheese crackers or not, you may be a fan of one of the two college football sides. Florida State is 3-0 all-time in the bowl game. It is tied with Miami, NC State and Clemson as the teams with the most wins.

Cheez-It Bowl Betting Line Tips

Cheez-It Bowl Predictions: Moneyline Betting Pick

The sportsbooks project Florida State as a favorite for the bowl, so check out all of the sports betting promotions for the best options for your wagering. Florida State's established talent with no opt-outs has them as the favorite to back.

A seven-point spread implies the possibility of a one-possession game. Oklahoma is 0-5 in one-score games this year, so back Florida State and its explosive offense to win outright. Florida State has been more clutch in close games, going 3-2 in one-possession contests.

The best moneyline number on the Seminoles is -278 at BetRivers Sportsbook.

Cheez-It Bowl Predictions: Point Spread Betting Pick

Sportsbooks are offering a spread on the total points for either side. Florida State is a 7.5-point favorite, with Oklahoma is spotted a touchdown.

Oklahoma has struggled with mobile quarterbacks all season, and Travis may be one of the best ones the Sooners face this season. An improved Seminole defense could also make the difference in limiting Oklahoma’s big-play offense. The majority of sportsbooks list Florida State as a -7.5-point spread favorite, and BetRivers currently has the best odds on the spread at -106.

Cheez-It Bowl Predictions: Over/Unde Betting Pick

You can also bet on the total points if the regular matchup between Florida State and Oklahoma is too hard to predict. You’ll find Over/Under markets at all U.S. sportsbooks. The sportsbook will set a point, and you must decide whether the total points will be over or under the mark. Most online sportsbooks go between 65 and 66 as their point. With Oklahoma's struggles on defense and both teams having explosive offenses, an Over 65 bet at around -110 may be the smart wager.

Given Oklahoma’s defensive issues, points will be scored in this game. If the Sooners fail to stop the Seminoles early on, it’ll force Oklahoma into catch-up mode, with its offense looking to go more uptempo and through the air. Gabriel and the Sooners are coming off their best offensive game of the season, and there are still concerns about Oklahoma stopping a mobile quarterback such as Travis. The over is the play with these two teams.

BetRivers has the over at 65.5 (-105) for the best number.
