Notre Dame and South Carolina also sit at No. 19 and No. 20, respectively, in the most-recent polls. This college football bowl game is about as even as it gets on paper. You can see more details on the game below and, later, learn about the best sports betting sites and odds.
Betting on Notre Dame at the NCAA Gator Bowl
Notre Dame came into this college football season with a Top 5 ranking and high hopes. But its season got off to a rocky start with back-to-back losses to Ohio State and unranked Marshall. It went on to win eight of its next nine games, before losing to USC in the finale.
The Fighting Irish don’t stand out in any offensive category, although their rushing attack is above average. Notre Dame averages 182.8 yards per game, which ranks 41st nationally. Its big strength here is rushing balance, with Audric Estime and Logan Diggs leading the attack. These sophomores have run for 840 and 752 yards, respectively, going into the NCAA Gator Bowl.
Notre Dame’s passing game hasn’t been great, with QB Drew Pyne throwing for just 2,021 yards (85th nationally). He’s already entered the transfer portal anyways, leaving Tyler Buchner running the show. The good news is that Buchner has seen the field plenty for a backup, throwing for 378 yards. He’ll be without tight end Michael Mayer (807 yards), though, who’s preparing for the NFL Draft.
The Notre Dame defense has been strong in holding teams to 21.8 points (27th nationally). Its passing defense has limited opponents to 190.8 yards, good for 16th in the nation. However, the D will be without All-American pass rusher Isaiah Foskey (11 sacks). Like Mayer, Foskey opted out of the Gator Bowl to get ready for the Draft.
Betting on South Carolina at the Gator Bowl
Similar to Notre Dame, South Carolina didn’t have a dream beginning to the season. It lost two of its first three games—including a non-competitive 48-7 stomping by No. 1 Georgia. But it rebounded to finish 8-4 (4-4 SEC) and make one of the better NCAAF bowl games. The Gamecocks saved their best for last, beating Tennessee and Clemson to close the regular season.
South Carolina boasts a decent passing attack with 261.1 yards per game (33rd nationally). QB Spencer Rattler has thrown for 2,765 yards, although his TD:INT ratio (16:11) could be better. He’ll have to contend with Notre Dame’s strong passing defense.
Rattler doesn’t get much help from the run game either, which averages 117.6 yards (98th). Things will only get worse in this department, with RB Marshawn Lloyd (572 yards) entering the transfer portal.
The Gamecocks haven’t been standouts on defense, surrendering 29.1 points (82nd). It’s terrible at stopping the run and gives up 197.2 yards per game (111th). The early departure of DL Zacch Pickens’ (NFL Draft preparation) will only hurt more.

Gator Bowl Predictions: Moneyline Betting Pick (Notre Dame -115)
The Fighting Irish are a slim favorite at this juncture. They’re missing more crucial players, with the losses of QB Pyne, TE Mayer, and DE Fosker. However, Notre Dame has run the ball well — something that should continue against South Carolina’s weak rushing D. We think that the run game will be the deciding factor here.
Gator Bowl Projections: Point Spread Betting Pick (Notre Dame -2.5)
This is another area where the results don’t offer much guidance. Notre Dame is 6-6 against the spread (ATS), while South Carolina has a 7-5 ATS record. We’re simply going with our moneyline Gator Bowl predictions due to the small spread. If the Fighting Irish win the game, then they’ll likely cover as well.
Gator Bowl Over/Under Betting Pick (Over 52, -110 odds)
Both teams have gone over in seven out of 12 games Normally, these results wouldn’t provide much of a window into the combined score. But South Carolina has gone over the totals line in the past six games. Notre Dame, meanwhile, has gone over in three of its last four contests. We like this trend to continue in the 2022 Gator Bowl.
