New York Jets Storylines

It’s been a difficult stretch for the Jets, coming off a second loss in as many weeks. As the play on the field remains inconsistent, the majority of the frustration stems from injury.

It wasn’t pretty last week in their 24-10 loss to the Bears, but Sam Darnold gave you exactly what you expect from him: 153 yards passing and a TD, and no turnovers.

The defense did it’s best to limit Chicago to under 30, but this was more of the same for a Jets offense that can’t seem to score. The team won two straight before dropping its last two. They put up less points in their two losses combined (27) than in either of their victories (42 & 34).

Darnold will have to rely once again on Deontay Burnett to get a big play or two, as the WR was good for four grabs for 61 yards. Miami beat the Jets, 20-12, the first time they played.

Miami Dolphins Storylines

Struggling might be a good definition for the Miami Dolphins right now, though you could take it a step further and say drowning. This is clearly not the same Miami team that started the season a red-hot 3-0. It’s dropped four of five, and the last two.

Start at the top with Miami’s issues, Ryan Tannehill will miss his fourth straight game Sunday with a shoulder injury. Brock Osweiler gets the nod instead. The team is 1-2 when Osweiler starts this season.

The defense has been atrocious over their last 5 games (1-4) giving up an average of 33.4 PPG. That can’t happen Sunday if the Dolphins expect to win.

Jets vs Dolphins Key Injuries

The Jets did not get good news this week with their top two WR in practice. Both Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa missed practice during the week and are not expected to be out there against Miami.

DB Trumaine Johnson is still questionable with the quad injury, missing practice this week, and is a game-time decision. OL Spencer Long was seen practicing this week for the first time in nearly 10 days. LB Frankie Luvu could miss the game with a neck injury that kept him out of practice.

Miami’s biggest injury concern is Ryan Tannehill’s shoulder, expected to keep him out for the fourth straight week. Osweiler is expected to start.

They lost second-year DT Vincent Taylor to the IR with a foot injury but added some new faces on the DL this week. DE Ziggy Hood was signed earlier in the week, as well as DT Sylvester Williams.

The Dolphins activated LB Mike Huff, who returns from the IR. WR Kenny Stills and DE Charles Harris missed some practice this week and would be huge losses if they can’t go on Sunday.

Jets vs Dolphins Best Bets

Here are some things for NFL betting fans to consider in this matchup:

Moneyline

The line of Jets +2.5 at 888Sport makes some sense when you look at how bad both teams have been playing, and factoring in the amount of injuries on both sides.

The difference here will actually be who can establish any sense of a run game. While the Dolphins are 17th in the NFL for total rushing yards, their leading rusher in Frank Gore has yet to find the end zone.

Kenyan Drake has all three Dolphins rushing TD this year and has been able to make a couple of big plays out of the backfield. The Jets should be able to take advantage of a Dolphins DL that has brand new components. I like the Jets to win outright. Bet them at +125 with 888Sport.

Over/Under Total

The over/under of 45.5 at SugarHouse is a tempting play. Both teams are dealing with injuries on both sides of the ball; both are down quality impact players as well.

The Jets have their starting QB healthy, but nobody around him seems to be, especially in the passing game. The Dolphins could be down their top playmaker and are already going to their backup QB.

The concern here lies in the Dolphins giving up so many points over their last five games. However, none of those teams were as bad as the Jets offense. Take under 45.5 with SugarHouse.

Away Team To Win By 1-6 Points

This will not be a blowout under any circumstances. I’m pretty confident neither team has the capacity to do that with their current injury situations. The Jets have the difference maker Sunday in a starting QB, but that’s not enough to factor in an extra touchdown.

Credit the Dolphins for bringing in a couple of new faces on their DL to try and stop the bleeding. Unfortunately for this team, one which has seen its defense routinely taken advantage of, it’s impossible to get quality players as FA this late in the year.

The Jets have the ability to come into Miami and stay alive, limit the Dolphins to one playmaker in Drake, without pulling away. Bet the Jets to win by 1-6 points at +350 with 888Sport.
