15:00 Newmarket – Eminency – 1pt @ 10/1

Eminency won his second career start last July and is 0-6 since then but, despite the defeats, he has been on the progressive side of the scale during that time. His form ties in closely with Quinault and Washington Heights having been right on their tails both here on the Rowley track in May and then again at York four weeks ago, which I’m not sure is the ideal venue for him to be running at.

He was rather caught out on the wing of the far side group and had nothing to give him a worthwhile tow from over a couple of furlongs out. How well he finished was encouraging and he has got a weights swing (4lbs & 3lbs) with the front two. Cheekpieces go on, which I hope will have a positive effect, and this track may be more to his liking. At 10/1, he’s a fair enough price in an open, competitive handicap.

17:20 Newmarket – Greatgadian – 1pt @ 9/1

Greatgadian has spent an age being poorly handicapped due to a couple of small-field, All-Weather successes in the early part of last year and only now is he starting to look like he’s on a winning mark. He finished mid-division in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot but travelled along very well for much of the way and it’s a pity they aren’t giving him one more chance in the blinkers that were in use there.

That was the first time he had them on but maybe connections feel he won’t finish a race out when they’re on, so cheekpieces return. He wasn’t disgraced in them at Nottingham on his previous start, not helped by being poorly positioned in a slowly run race. There should be a gallop on this time and he drops into Class 3 company for the first time in a long time. If all pans out to suit, he should go well.

17:30 Doncaster – Eldrickjones – 1pt @ 12/1

Eldrickjones has been on my radar for a little while and this might be one of the better opportunities he has had. We can ignore his last run altogether as it came in a slowly run 1m 1f contest and he doesn’t stay that far, nor does he operate overly well off slower tempos. He’ll be a lot happier back to 7f and wasn’t disgraced in a big field on his penultimate start at York (for which I had backed him).

Leniency from the assessors sees him running off 5lbs lower now and he’s 7lbs below his encouraging seasonal return at Newcastle, for which he shaped as if he’d tighten up for it. Jason Hart was on board that day and returns now, which I feel is a positive for his chances. Blinkers go on again, which could also spark an improvement, and there’s enough in place to think that any double-figured price is big.
