14:20 Doncaster – Ravenglass – 1pt @ 4/1

Richard Fahey looks to have found Ravenglass another good opportunity. He’s officially 3lbs well-in following a big run at Beverley 10 days ago and was unlucky to bump into an outsider who thrived off what was a rapid pace up-front. The selection enjoyed it as well, but sat closer and didn’t have enough in reserve to fend him off, for all that he kept on strongly to the line to pull clear of the third home.

It was a performance that was much more in line with what he achieved on his opening two runs of the season when placing at Newcastle and Pontefract, and posting a similar figure will see him as tough to beat in this off 67. It’s a slight drop in grade as well, from a 0-75 to a 0-70, and Doncaster’s round mile should play to his strengths. 4/1 is far from mind-blowing but he has major claims again.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

16:05 Doncaster – Nomadic Empire – 1pt @ 9/2

Nomadic Empire started the season slowly after returning from a stint in Bahrain but was much more “on it” the last twice, finishing a good third to Raatea at Haydock before backing that up with a similar effort at Windsor. He was only sixth at the line on that occasion but was beaten less than a couple of lengths and was right on the tail of the winner, Sterling Knight, coming into the final half-furlong.

Those runs were over 6f and on what he did last time in particular, finishing tamely after coming there to hold every chance, reverting to the minimum trip may be the answer. He has previous at this track as well, finishing second in this race off 10lbs higher a couple of years ago, and one of last season’s peak figures was achieved when fourth in the Portland. With a visor in use again, he must be a player.

16:50 Sandown – Balboa – 1pt @ 12/1

Balboa could do anything, such is his profile to date, but it’s only his second go in a handicap and he has been dropped 3lbs. That looks like a workable mark based on the hints of his debut at Kempton in December, where he was barely in the picture as they turned for home. In the end, he flew up the straight to finish fifth to Hadrianus (rated 101 now) and was only beaten by four-lengths.

That form hasn’t been matched since, which is the worry as you’d always prefer to see them taking a step forward from their debut efforts. However, the last twice he was running on tight tracks and may be a bit on the slow side to cope with the steady, steady, sprint nature of them. The Lingfield race was exceptionally slowly run and maybe the surface wasn’t to his liking at Wolverhampton last time.

There’s a lot of wishing, hoping and forgiving involved, but he’s onto turf for the first time and steps up in trip to 1m 6f. Both changing elements could prove to aid his cause and he has had almost four-months off since his last run. That will have given Jamie Osborne time to get him back onto the right path at home and I’m certain he has a runner who is handicapped to do better if he can put it together.
