India’s destiny remains firmly in their own hands after eight consecutive wins sealed their place at the top of the Cricket World Cup standings.
But the host nation has not just been winning - they have been dominating all before them, following up five successful run chases by a margin of 4+ wickets with three straight wins by triple digit run margins.
With five batters amassing 200+ runs and five bowlers collecting 10+ wickets throughout the tournament, there has hardly been a chink in the armour for oppositions to exploit.
There is expected to be a party-like atmosphere at the usually raucous Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru on Sunday as India rounds out their preparation for next week’s semi-finals rematch against New Zealand.
India are understandably unbackable favourites on Indian cricket betting apps, but we have come across some interesting player props that could bring the league stage to a profitable end.
The Numbers That Matter
- India’s took 76 of a possible 80 wickets at this World Cup (avg 19.18, 4.50rpo)
- The Dutch opening partnership is averaging 15 runs at this World Cup
- Virat Kohli scored 50+ in five of seven IPL innings in Bengaluru this year
- Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets five times at this World Cup but is yet to take 3+
Engel-brilliant!
Some of the finest World Cup stories are those of individual players who have either seemingly come out of nowhere or were thrown into the cauldron as last minute replacements only to become indispensable assets for their team.
Think Dilshan Madushanka of Sri Lanka, South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee, and to a lesser extent Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel. Dutch debutant Sybrand Engelbrecht is another example.
Engelbrecht retired from all cricket in 2016 after years of struggling to hold down a first team spot in South Africa’s domestic circuit, and only in 2021 began playing weekend cricket for fun in the Netherlands after migrating there for his full-time job in project management.
The 35-year-old has the vigour and energy of a man five years younger and has been performing impressively for a man making his international debut at a World Cup just two years after taking up the sport for a second time.
Bowlers who sent down deliveries to him without taking his wicket at this tournament include Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan and Chris Woakes.
We hope to see him kick on at the 2024 T20 World Cup, but for now we’re expecting him to record a fifth 30+ score in six innings.
Rohit Cherishes the Chinnaswamy
On the basis of Rohit Sharma clearing 40+ runs in six of his eight games at this World Cup, the over-under mark set by the best cricket betting sites appears to be one he should exceed against one of the tournament’s poorer bowling attacks.
He often enjoys batting against lower ranked opposition, illustrated by his ODI career average of 49 climbing further when taking on nations such as Afghanistan (75), Bangladesh (56), Ireland (64) and the UAE (57no in his only innings).
Multiple seasons of IPL success as a batter and then a captain don’t come accidentally, and Rohit has applied years of wisdom to the Indian ODI side, transforming them into a fearless and unforgiving side capable of shutting out the immense outside noise that inevitably comes with being favourites at a home World Cup.
Rohit has scored more powerplay runs than any other batter at this World Cup, piling on 265 at a rate of 7.83rpo (the average powerplay run rate for the whole tournament going into the weekend was 5.44rpo, for a reference point) and rounds out his league stage against a team taking just 1.4 powerplay wickets per game.
Now he’s back at a venue where he boasts ODI career scores of 44, 209, 65 and 119 from four innings. One more, please!
Prediction: Rohit Sharma over 42.5 runs - 1.83 @ Parimatch
Overachieving Edwards Can Bow Out Proud
He hasn’t quite taken this World Cup by storm in the way he destroyed the Qualifier in Zimbabwe, but Dutch captain Scott Edwards has surely earned himself some contracts on the franchise T20 circuit if not for Australian state Victoria with his World Cup efforts.
Edwards recorded four 30+ scores against the likes of England, New Zealand, South Africa and Bangladesh, whilst as of Friday he topped the charts for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper at this World Cup with 13 catches and two stumpings.
It is that supplementary stat that makes his player performance mark with cricket bookmakers quite interesting.
If he were to continue his average of about two dismissals per game here - and perhaps hoping for one dismissal is more realistic given the Dutch may struggle to take wickets - that would further reduce the runs he needs to clear 32+ points (1 per run, 10 per catch, 25 per stumping).
Prediction: Scott Edwards over 31.5 PP points - 1.83 @ Parimatch
