IPL Mumbai v Chennai: Latest Odds & Analysis

Mumbai v Chennai predictions:

When: Sunday 14 April, 7:30pm IST

Where: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Watch: Star Sports and JioCinema

Best Odds: Mumbai 1.8, Chennai 2.05

The greatest IPL rivalry is back for another round (sorry RCB fans!), and with Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sadly meeting just once during the group stage this year, we just had to come back to share with you our best MI v CSK predictions for this Sunday evening game at Wankhede.

The 37th IPL El Clásico (39th if you want to count the ill-fated Champions League T20) takes place with both teams in mid-table positions and both relying heavily on home venues for their success so far in 2024.

Despite that, we’re predicting Chennai’s bowlers to upset the apple cart as they did at this location in 2023, and we’ll explain why below.

As always, we’ll also select two player bets from our favourite cricket betting sites that could help make this marquee matchup a very enjoyable and profitable one.

The Numbers That Matter

  • 14 of the last 16 IPL innings in Mumbai were worth 190+ runs
  • CSK hit the most sixes in each of the last six H2Hs
  • Jasprit Bumrah v Chennai at Wankhede: 2-109 from 15 overs
  • Shivam Dube scored 25+ runs in four of five games in IPL 2024

Chennai to join Rajasthan on eight points

There’s no ignoring Mumbai’s superb home form that has seen them win seven of their last nine games at Wankhede Stadium, but immediately before that was a seven-wicket defeat to Chennai in what was their opening home game of 2023.

Some of Chennai’s best performers on that evening, such as Ravindra Jadeja (3-20), Tushar Deshpande (2-21), Ajinkya Rahane (61) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (40*) have put together some excellent performances in 2024 and it wouldn’t be out of turn for any of them to replicate such numbers here.

Mumbai’s last two games at home saw their batters have their way with Delhi and RCB who, after 25 matches, were first and third in the league for worst collective economy rate.

Chennai’s bowlers, on the other hand, had the best economy rate (8.25rpo) and were conceding just six sixes per innings on average.

The likes of Jadeja, Theekshana, Deshpande and Mustafizur have all been hard to get away and aren’t going to give Mumbai’s big hitters such an easy time.

Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav both have ordinary personal records against some key Chennai bowlers, and if they can be thwarted, that will go quite some way towards the defending champions picking up their first away win of 2024.

Prediction: Chennai to win - 2.0 @ Melbet Sports

SKY back down to earth

After a disappointing duck in his first game of the season, Suryakumar Yadav announced his proper return to the IPL with a devastating 17-ball half-century that included 44 runs in boundaries.

We’re backing him to do just what he did in 2023, which was to follow up his first impactful score of the season with another failure (before going on that brilliant run of seven straight 20+ run innings).

That’s on the basis of being unable to get on top of every current Chennai bowler he has ever faced in this competition.

‘SKY’ averages just 16 against the six bowlers that the Super Kings used in their previous match, having been dismissed seven times with a strike rate of 6.2rpo.

That includes 4-48 from 10.2 overs bowled by Jadeja, 2-23 against Shardul Thakur, and Mustafizur Rahman has also taken his wicket once in nine balls bowled.

Most IPL betting sites have set his mark for this game at 25.5 runs, which he has exceeded in six of 14 innings against Chennai, so this is a reasonably fair price on those numbers alone.

Prediction: Suryakumar Yadav under 25.5 runs - 1.83 @ Melbet Sports

Cashin’ in on Kishan

Head-to-head player records play a big part in our deliberations for these successful bets, and there’s another one that is too compelling to ignore.

Ishan Kishan has faced a total of 70 balls combined against the set of bowlers that Chennai sent out to battle in their comfortable home win over Kolkata for a total of 105 runs at an average of 105 and scoring rate of nine runs per over.

Neither Shardul Thakur (0-46), Mustafizur Rahman (0-26) nor Tushar Deshpande (0-3) have dismissed him, whilst Jadeja’s only wicket of Kishan came in one of last year’s meetings.

He’s playing himself into some excellent form, scoring 69 and 42 in his last two knocks at Wankhede Stadium, where he has cleared the 24.5 run mark set by cricket betting apps in two-thirds of his last 12 IPL innings.

Chennai’s bowlers have taken just two powerplay wickets across their last three games, so if he can survive the first six overs, he may already be there by the six-over mark.

Prediction: Ishan Kishan over 24.5 runs - 1.83 @ Melbet Sports
