SPFL 2024/25: Celtic Vs Rangers Betting Tips For First Old Firm Derby

The SPFL title cannot be won on the first day of September, but results in the Old Firm games can go a long way to determining who wins the title in May.

The last time the championship was won by a team that took fewer points in that season's derbies, was back in 2010/11 when Rangers claimed the title despite taking four points compared with Celtic's seven.

Celtic have got off to a better start than their neighbours and that makes them favourites on football betting sites for the season's first showdown.

Celtic Vs Rangers Betting Tips: Hoops To Dominate First Half

In recent seasons, Celtic have been quick out of the blocks in Old Firm games. Former manager Ange Postecoglou set the tone by getting the ball boys to return the ball as quickly as they could to maintain the high tempo he wanted.

This has led to the Hoops dominating the first period of play, scoring first in 12 of the last 13 derbies. Celtic are 8/15 on new betting sites to open the scoring, but The Panel are going for the home side to lead at half-time.

Celtic Vs Rangers Odds: Cards At A Premium

When you think of the Old Firm derby, you think of cards and lots of them. The average card count in the five league and cup meetings last season produced an average of 6.2 cards per game.

That includes 12 in the Scottish Cup final, which Celtic won thanks to Adam Idah's last-minute goal. The final derby of the season always raises the temperature, even more so with a trophy up for grabs.

Under 4.5 yellow cards would have been a winning bet in three of the four league games before that Hampden showdown so The Panel are confident of under 5.5 cards, which can be backed at 11/10 on the best new betting sites.

John Beaton will be Sunday's referee, and in the one Old Firm game he was in the middle for last season, he showed four yellow cards in a 3-3 draw.

Celtic Vs Rangers Preview: Celtic To Win High-Scoring Game

Sunday's first Old Firm derby will be the latest where away fans are not allowed to attend the game.

Brendan Rodgers was vocal about this issue when asked about it earlier this season, saying: "It's not a Celtic/Rangers thing. It's a Rangers thing."

Without Rangers fans cheering on their team, the smart money is on Celtic to win.

The Panel know Celtic's last five wins over their nearest rivals have seen under 3.5 total goals land, including a 1-0 victory to win the Scottish Cup final in May.

Back the Hoops to win with three goals or fewer.
