13:15 Haydock – Clarendon House – 1pt @ 9/1
Clarendon House looks a few points on the large side and I think he can trouble all of these. He arrives on the back of a cracking effort in the Epsom Dash last week, a race in which he injected even more pace into over a furlong from home. That was after travelling smoothly and if his rider was able to do it all again, I’d imagine that he would have been more patient and waited for longer to commit.
A couple of finishers ended up collaring him late on but it was still a fine effort and backed up an encouraging run behind Regional at York when he looked a step short. He should be at peak fitness now and even though this is a jump up in grade, he’s only 4lbs below the top-rated. There’s pace next door in Fine Wine and if Neil Callan is patient, the horse could show an even better level this time.
We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps
13:50 Haydock – Nomadic Empire – 1pt @ 18/1
Nomadic Empire, like plenty of David O’Meara’s runners, hasn’t maxed out yet this season. He also had a break following a winter trip to Bahrain, during which he won once and ran well on another couple of occasions, and that may have taken a bit of getting over. Switching back to a visor at York last time didn’t help him anyway and I got the impression they were always going too fast for him.
He has an extra furlong to race over this time, the cheekpieces he won his last race in are being used again and Neil Callan – on board for that success – returns as well. He’s 10lbs below the peak of his victories in England and although he could be on the slippery slope back towards Class 4 level for the first time ever, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a revival here. 18/1 is quite big to me regardless.
14:25 Haydock – Prydwen – 1pt @ 11/1
Prydwen didn’t seem happy on soft ground (it wasn’t as described at the time) or the track, or both, when racing at Newmarket, and getting onto a faster surface on a flat track may see him prove capable of progressing further. He has a fine record so far, 5-16 overall, and won at decent Wolverhampton handicap in March off 3lbs lower despite not getting a suitable pace to sit behind.
His sole run here yielded a C&D success by two-lengths (off 87) and that’s the only time he has had a suitable setup on turf in terms of track, trip, ground and pace. I’m not certain how fast they’ll go here so that is a risk to factor into the bet but he has scored granted both speed scenarios and hopefully whatever presents won’t hold him back. Either way, double-figured quotes are worth chancing.
