14:50 Catterick – Captain Corcoran – 1pt @ 18/1
Captain Corcoran has been on my radar for a while now and he’s worth risking at a big price here. That price is for good reason as his last two efforts have been disappointing, including once over C&D, but he went too fast on testing ground at Nottingham last time and being hard against the rail may not have been the place to be either. I’m inclined to forgive and forget that altogether.
It’s not as if he hasn’t shown recent promise, with his seasonal return at Thirsk catching the eye. He finished well from off the pace that day, a change of tactics compared to his usual running style, and he’s 4lbs lower in the weights now. He’s actually back to his last winning mark and whilst there are a few questions to answer, any price at 16/1 or above is fair in the hope of him putting it all together.

15:00 Musselburgh – Lady Lade – 1pt @ 12/1
Lady Lade did not live up to market expectations when behind a few of these over C&D ten days ago and if that’s a true reflection of where she’s at presently, her chance is non-existent. However, she was hassled up top by Riversway and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more patient tactics employed this time around, which could help to see her in a much better light for her third start of the season.
The first start offered a lot more promise, as she finished only three-lengths behind in a big field (again over C&D) and actually traded 1.5 in-running before a lack of fitness seemed to catch her out on soft ground. Quicker conditions aren’t a problem and it won’t take a major step up on that run to get involved in this. We have to ignore the most recent start but I think the price takes it into account.
15:30 Musselburgh – Gobi Sunset – 1pt @ 7/2
Gobi Sunset has never had the chance to run in a 0-75 on turf and the sole time he got into one on the All-Weather, he finished second by a nose. His last run, over C&D, was a bit on the disappointing side but none of those who beat him home would be eligible to run in this and the ground was testing enough for his liking. In the circumstances, he definitely wasn’t disgraced in finishing mid-div anyway.
There are hints of pace pressure in this but he’s the only one who goes forward regularly, which could lead to a tactical advantage on a track that favours speed. Connor Beasley is riding really well so it’s far from a negative to see him taking over in the saddle and he should be able to get a good tune out of this fellow today. There’s plenty in favour and although the price has shortened, I’ll still back him.
