15:35 Beverley – Sound Reason – 1pt @ 15/2

Sound Reason is being given a chance by the handicapper and if his inexperienced rider can get a tune out of him, he could prove to be overpriced here. Neither effort this season has been overly good but he needed his first run here and then was placed too far back in the field at Wetherby when also looking a step short. That was a 0-85 as well and this is significantly weaker in terms of the opposition.

Dropping back to a stiff 5f is in his favour as well and prior to his flop last month, his C&D form read 1-2. I know very little about jockey Curtis Wilson-Ruddock, who claims 7lbs, but Kevin Ryan doesn’t have too many bad apprentices hanging around and he looked tidy enough on Rathbone a couple of times last season. This horse is not a simple ride for anyone but if he’s in form, he’s weighted to go well.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

16:10 Beverley – Antagonize – 1pt @ 16/1

Antagonize ran a nothing race at Nottingham last time but the ground was heavy and he’s unable to act on it, so I’m inclined to just ignore that. His only other start this year came on the All-Weather, which he’s not as effective on, and he seemed to be in need of the spin. Third time up, from a fitness point of view anyway, could be when we see him nearing his peak and I think he’s worth chancing.

This C&D won’t be a problem anyway, his sole run over it yielding a win off 2lbs higher, and front-running tactics can often bear fruit at this track. His running style is particularly odd as he tends to blast off and isn’t the easiest to control, but there’ll come a day when he gets loose and doesn’t come back. Hopefully this might be it under a capable 3lb-claiming apprentice who’s riding well this year.

18:30 Wetherby – Mr Trevor – 1pt @ 9/1

Mr Trevor has been given a split mark since flopping here on his seasonal reappearance, now 5lbs lower on turf than he is on the All-Weather, and that gives him some wiggle room to work with. That run was poor, no doubt, but it was his first try over a mile and he didn’t stay so it’s easy to write off. He moved fine into contention as well and hinted at better than the bare form suggests in the book.

He’ll improve for the outing anyway, his first in 166 days, and drops back to 7f. Better ground will help also (provided the rain stays away) and if he can translate last season’s progression on tapeta to the turf, he’s 3lbs below his last winning mark in that code. The market has cottoned on to his chance this morning so he’s not as appealing as he was, but 8/1+ is still fair enough and he can get into it late on.

19:30 Wetherby – Ballyare – 1pt @ 10/1

Ballyare had no chance of getting involved at Musselburgh last time out, a low draw ensuring a racing position that wasn’t going to pay dividends. The test on offer probably wasn’t to his liking anyway and I wouldn’t be surprised to see better on show today. His draw in the middle won’t be a problem this time and he’s now 5lbs lower than when successful at Chester last June, so has no handicapping excuses.

Three outings ago he was only beaten a half-length off 2lbs higher at Wolverhampton, doing easily the best of those who were held up, and a similar performance puts him bang in the mix with the best of these. I like the booking of Daniel Tudhope, who will suit the horse well, and Bert Kibbler should ensure a strong pace to sit off. With luck in the run, we could get to see his true worth this time.
