15:00 Lingfield – Big Bard – 1pt @ 9/1
Big Bard hasn’t won for a while but is edging down towards a rating he should defy soon. It’s the first time he has got down to 58 since his last win in October of 2021 and some of his recent efforts haven’t been that bad, including a three-length defeat over C&D on his penultimate start off 4lbs higher.
He was solid in the market upped to 7f here last time but raced too keenly in a contest where the pace didn’t stop and only ran on a bit in the final furlong. He’ll be happier back sprinting and I hope to see a change of tactics that make use of the pace he has, plus he should be able to put a nice target on the back of Simon Dow’s runner.
The fact that he’s only a pound away from being eligible for 0-55’s makes me wonder whether today will be the main day in the mind of connections, but he’s priced around the 9/1 mark and that looks fair to me. On his best efforts, even as recently as the autumn, he has enough about him to trouble these.

18:00 Kempton – Roscioli – 1pt @ 8/1
Roscioli was one of my selections when he ran at Southwell last time and despite having a good position throughout, he couldn’t quicken up when the going got tough. That came over 1m 3f at Southwell and Andrew Balding makes a big switch here as the horse drops back to a mile for the first time since mid-2021.
It’s hard to be certain whether he has the pace to cope but he caught the eye at Wolverhampton over the extended 1m 1f in December and travelled nicely over that same C&D next time. With the track riding on the slower side and a fast pace expected, his stamina for further might come in handy and he’s not exactly lacking for a bit of speed. I’m certain he’s on a workable mark, his draw is a good one and if he finds a good rhythm, he can make his presence felt in the closing stages.
19:00 Kempton – Billy Mill – 1pt @ 4/1
Rod Millman’s horses are in good order and Billy Mill could strike again if stall nine isn’t a problem. He was drawn widest at Wolverhampton last time as well but you’re on the turn very quickly over the 7f trip there and he had no chance to get a proper position. Despite being anchored in rear, it was encouraging to see how well he finished up the straight to grab third spot and it was likely a career-best run.
His previous start, which came over the mile here, was an excellent effort as well and with his mark being untouched for either of those runs, he’s weighted to do something better. Coming back here will help his cause and it should be easier to get an advantageous position as a lot of these tend to sit further back in the field. 4/1 looks a fair price and I’d have him and Ring Of Gold close in the betting.
