14:00 Thirsk – Democracy Dilemma – 1pt @ 15/2

Democracy Dilemma is a ball of speed and I’m interested to see how he’ll get on at the minimum trip again. His sole start over it this year yielded an easy success at Wolverhampton and he showed plenty of pace once more at Lingfield last time, looking likely to win (traded 1/10) coming into the closing stages before a decent prospect in Expert Agent managed to collar him in the final strides of the race.

Deep ground is the unknown and could blunt how quick he can go, but it’s worth noting that most of his siblings have won on soft or heavy, with the other scoring on good-to-soft. His maiden win came on good-to-soft as well and hopefully it won’t be a problem. This track suits his running style and Hollie Doyle is an obviously good booking. If all goes to plan, they’ll be in there pitching late on.

15:15 Newbury – Galiac – 1pt @ 16/1

Galiac is an interesting contender. I’m not 100% certain about him in a race of this nature on very soft ground, hence a win-only bet, but if it’s not a problem then he has a lot of talent to show and could be on a good mark. He won two of his first three starts last season, then performed almost at least as well in defeat over the course of five more runs, three of them in valuable Racing League handicaps.

He has been noted as a “thug at home” by his trainer before and it’s possible that gelding him could eke out more improvement. Going well when fresh wasn’t a problem last year when he made a winning reappearance at Goodwood in a valuable handicap (worth more than this) and he looked to be quite a strong stayer at a mile when second at Doncaster in August. With luck, he's a player.

15:45 Thirsk – So Grateful – 1pt @ 12/1

So Grateful was a major improver on the All-Weather in the second half of last year and it’s not impossible that he could take advantage of a 6lb lower turf mark. When last seen, he had lost his edge, a disappointing couple of 5f efforts either side of a 6f run where he was just too keen to get home. However, a few months off the track will hopefully see him right and get back to the level he can show on a good day.

Two course runs last year yielded a short-head second and a one-length third in a 20 runner contest, and although that was on a sounder surface, he’s another with soft and heavy ground winners in his family. He is a risky play, there’s no doubt about that, but I think it’s worthwhile at the prices and off the split mark. The yard are going along quite well also and his claims are a bit underrated in my book.

16:15 Thirsk – Parisiac – 1pt @ 9/1

Alice Haynes has her string in fine order and Parisiac could be set to bounce into form today. All four of his runs since joining the yard have come on the All-Weather and although not beaten too far on the first of those, he doesn’t seem to be as effective on it. He won twice on turf for Bryan Smart, including once on soft, and wasn’t disgraced in a good handicap at Nottingham on his final start of 2022.

He’s a full 15lbs lower in the weights now and up to 6f again on turf, we’re into no excuses territory with him. The question mark, of course, is his well-being and whether he’s in any sort of form, but he’s yet to run below 0-90 level on turf, this is a 0-75, and there’s a lot in his favour. He has early speed as well, something that is lacking with many of the opposition, and might be able to put it to use on this track.
