19:00 Ayr – Fast And Loose – 1pt @ 11/2

Fast And Loose was supported as soon as the market had opened but has since drifted back out and looks a fair bet at 5/1+. He only won a small-field novice event from ten starts as a 3-year-old but lost out by just a head, a short-head and a nose on three of his handicap runs. One of those came in the C&D Bronze Cup when blinkers were applied for the first time and this track clearly holds no issues.

He returned to action at Doncaster a couple of weeks ago and ran fine, finishing third. That was without the blinkers, cheekpieces being in use instead, and the ground was heavy. He handles it to an extent but looks far more comfortable when it’s good or better and he will enjoy today’s conditions. If he gets the lead and doesn’t have to go too quick early, it won’t be easy for the others to catch up.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

19:30 Ayr – Stay Smart – 1pt @ 11/1

Stay Smart was one of my last time out selections when he ran over 6f here and he showed loads of pace on that occasion before hanging right, weakening and being eased off. It wasn’t exactly the sort of run that screams he’s an imminent winner but the pace he displayed offered some sort of hope and he may not have taken to the blinkers that were on for the first time, along with going too fast.

The headgear is removed and he drops back to 5f. That could be the right play and his record over the trip is quite good anyway, 11 runs yielding two wins, two seconds and two thirds. He’s all of 17lbs lower in the weights than his last attempt at it and is down in a 0-55 for the first time ever. His current well-being is a worry, of course, but price is everything and the risk is worth the potential reward.

20:00 Ayr – Darkness – 1pt @ 4/1

Darkness lined up in the Victoria Cup ten days ago and I fancied him to run a big race, and bet accordingly. Unfortunately, he was unable to backup that thought process as he finished ten-lengths behind the winner, never travelling as well as I had expected him to. That’s not an ideal run to support him on but he is much better than it would suggest and will hopefully bounce back to his true level.

He definitely has a class edge over the majority of these, dropping into a 0-85 for the first time since joining David O’Meara last season, and that’s a help. Quicker ground should not be a problem (seems to act on everything; although I thought he’d prefer cut previously) and if he travels around as well as he can on a going day, he must be a major contender in this grade. 4/1 looks reasonable to me.
