14:20 Lingfield – Spirit Of Nguru – 1pt @ 11/4

Spirit Of Nguru was heavily supported to make a winning start as a sprinter when dropped in trip at Kempton last time but despite the addition of blinkers for the first time, he wasn’t quick enough to cope with that test. He still ran well to finish in third but never had a chance of troubling the winner.

Returning to 7f will be an obvious help and he seemed to be hitting top form when second on his previous two outings behind classy types in Witch Hunter and Tiger Crusade (won again since). How well he'll take to Lingfield remains to be seen but a speedy test shouldn’t be a problem over this trip and both of his novice wins last winter came over 7f on polytrack. Cieren Fallon takes the ride and if all goes to plan in running, it’ll be disappointing if they’re not bang in the mix late on.

14:50 Lingfield – Come On John – 1pt @ 10/1

Come On John runs in a 0-60 for the first time ever and shaped with some promise over a quarter-mile further a few weeks ago. It was only his second go at that trip, his first since joining this yard, and whilst he seemed to stay quite well, dropping back to the mile won’t be an inconvenience.

He’s now half a stone lower than when he joined the yard in November and 3lbs lower than when only beaten three-lengths over C&D on his penultimate start. That was the first sign of him coming back to form and from a pure ratings point of view, he won’t have to step up very much to at least hit the places in this. His draw should ensure cover on the rail and if the splits come when they’re needed, he will hopefully be ready to finish as well as anything else. 10/1 looks like a fair price to me.

15:25 Lingfield – Rainbow Sign – 1pt @ 15/2

Rainbow Sign was one of my fancies when he lined up in a similar contest over the mile here last time but despite travelling well into the home straight, he clearly didn’t get the trip. On the plus side, it was an encouraging run that suggests he’s in better knick than the form figures are showing us.

He moved quite well on his previous start over C&D also but had been off for eleven weeks beforehand and didn’t get a clear run, so probably wasn’t operating at his best. This looks like it could be his most suitable target and his last success came at this C&D in a 0-50 classified contest, the same level as this. I would have preferred to see Josh Bryan retain the ride but Paddy Bradley takes off a handy 3lbs with his claim and the draw in four is a good one. Hopefully they’ll be involved.

18:45 Wolverhampton – Asdaa – 1pt @ 9/1

Asdaa has already won a few races during the winter so he might be as high in the weights as he cares for. However, he’s just a couple of pounds higher than his last success and the excellent Daniel Muscutt takes control for the first time, which may give him a larger edge in comparison to usual.

At Newcastle last time, he was ridden by an apprentice having his first ride in public and they ended up on the far rail, which is very rarely ever the place to be. Before that, he wasn’t disgraced at Kempton from a bad draw and was only three-parts of a length off Sense Of Worth the time before. That one was an eyecatcher but he’s 3/1 here, whereas Asdaa is a best-priced 9/1 and the difference isn’t justified to me, especially with Muscutt on board. I think he’ll show his true worth again.
