17:45 Newcastle – Asdaa – 1pt @ 7/1
Asdaa was one of my last time out selections and although he finished eight of the 9 runners, he wasn’t beaten far. Sitting close enough to the pace probably didn’t aid his cause on the day and I think there’s plenty to suggest he remains in form. Having four weeks off should be a help as he has been on the go regularly during the winter and connections look to have found a good opportunity for him.
What could prove to be the most beneficial aspect is lining up in a race that lacks any major pace angles. All of the opposition want to come home late off a good gallop and the likelihood is that there’s a solo up for grabs if Jason Hart wants to send him on. The last time he ran in a 0-70 over C&D, he made all to win under Hart and 11/2 or bigger about a repeat trick is a worthwhile play for me.

18:15 Newcastle – Jems Bond – 1pt @ 9/2
Jems Bond has built up a fine record here considering he has never been rated higher than 63. Nineteen course visits yielding four wins and six seconds, including a C&D success on his most recent visit. He does have to overcome a 2lb higher mark but he has definitely upped his game during this campaign and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another win or two left in his locker before long.
Granted, he was disappointing last time out but that was an amateur riders’ race over a mile at Southwell and although he does stay that far, he’s more effective over shorter. Connor Beasley returning in the saddle is a big plus given his three rides on the horse have resulted in two wins and a second, and the yard are in fine form. If all goes to plan, Jems Bond should be in there pitching late on.
19:15 Newcastle – Thaki – 1pt @ 3/1
Thaki is tactically versatile to a point but he’s best when ridden a bit further back off a strong gallop and sat handy off a really slow early tempo when beaten a neck into second over C&D a couple of weeks ago. He was battling it out for the lead earlier than ideal as a result and I’d be inclined to think that effort hints at the horse being back towards something close to his peak level of form.
There should be more of a true test on offer and if he gets cover this time, I’d like to think he’ll be very hard to stop. Billy Loughnane is booked to ride for the first time for the yard and is effectively stealing a 5lb claim, whilst cheekpieces are added to his regular tongue-tie and they might help him to go forward. He’s an obvious play that doesn’t take much finding but will be in the mix if the splits come.
