13:30 Haydock – Splendent – 1pt @ 10/1

Cieren Fallon is 8-32 (+55 level stakes profit) when riding for the Cole’s and I think he should be able to get a good tune out of Splendent in this. His 3-year-old campaign didn’t go to plan as he only made it to the track on three occasions; the first being a promising second at Windsor (under Fallon), the second may have come too soon and the third – after a break – was a write-off on the All-Weather.

If he could return to the levels he was showing in novices as a juvenile, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s a well-treated runner off 80. Whether he can bounce back remains to be seen but a tongue-tie is in use for the first time, which could spark an improvement, and he looks the type to improve with time and experience. At 9/1 or bigger, the risk is worth it and I reckon he’ll win races this season.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

14:05 Haydock – Dream Together – 1pt @ 10/1

Dream Together has C&D form reading 2-7-3-1-2, never beaten more than two-lengths, and the lowest mark he has raced off here was 69. Thanks to some lesser efforts since his last visit in July, he’s returning off 60 and the last 6lbs of that drop has come on the back of three All-Weather runs. He doesn’t seem to be as effective in that code and it looks to have let him in light for this turf comeback.

Jedd O’Keefe has had him out twice in the last four weeks, so fitness won’t be a problem, and I just hope there isn’t too much rain as he’d prefer a sounder surface, for all that he can handle some cut. Graham Lee is a positive booking for the yard (never been on this fellow before) and if they get into a good rhythm towards the front end, they could be hard to pass. 10/1 is generous given his C&D record.

15:45 Haydock – Rhoscolyn – 1pt @ 9/1

Rhoscolyn is back to a double-digit mark for the first time in almost a couple of years and should go well if the sharpness is there for his opening run of the season. He was massively progressive in his debut campaign for this yard in 2021, improving from a mark of 74 to a peak of 106, but found last year a lot tougher, failing to win a race having been campaigned in super competitive 7f/1m handicaps.

A number of good efforts were on show, however, and it’s not like he regressed, he was just towards his upper limit ratings-wise. His breathing may have been an issue also as he has had a wind-op since (not his first) and that could be a help. A lot depends on how readied he has been at home but there’s a good prize on offer and he has the talent to compete with any of these at the weights.

16:10 Ripon – Last Crusader – 1pt @ 16/1

At the last meeting here, there was a distinct advantage to going over to the far side in the sprint races and it’ll be interesting to see whether history repeats itself. Last Crusader is a pacy front-runner when he’s on a good day and from the lowest stall of all, I’m hoping Danny Tudhope heads off to his right and gets onto that rail. If he does, he could be hard to catch in a visor for the first time.

The question with this selection, even ignoring any tactical hopes, is whether he can be coaxed into form again as his last five runs have been rubbish compared to what he showed in his victory at York last May. Getting onto turf again will help his cause and the visor angle is interesting. It could be a last resort but he’s rated to do something if all is well and I’ll gamble with a small win bet at the prices.
