14:00 Newcastle – Buxted Too – 1pt @ 10/3

I tried to get Buxted Too beaten last week when taking him on with Jubilee Girl over C&D and whilst the selection that day ran a good race from the front, she ended up getting destroyed by Ian Williams’ charge. He brought his game to a new level there, making it four wins on the bounce, and although he’s running under a penalty, he’s 2lbs well-in compared to what he’ll be running on from next week.

Vega Sicilia is the unexposed one in opposition and has taken the bulk of the money so far, shortening in to 6/5. The form of his Lingfield second is working out but, whilst it won’t be simple to beat him, his price looks far too short now. I’m not 100% sure about him on a stiffer mile-and-a-half and hope Buxted Too’s previous here will give him an edge. It should be close between them, and one or two of the others could get involved, but Ian Williams’ charge is around the 2/1 mark for me.

15:10 Newcastle – Zealot – 1pt @ 2/1

Zealot tends to be slow to get going but has been the quickest home on five of his last six starts and it’s not impossible that he has more to offer despite a new career-high rating of 90. Moving to Mick Appleby’s yard has turned this fellow inside out and he’s still unexposed at 1m 2f.

Indeed, it was going up to this trip for the first time (over C&D five weeks ago) that brought about the guts of a 10lb improvement as he comfortably defeated a talented sort in Crystal Delight, with the reopposing Dream Harder well back in third. That rival won since so there’s only a 1lb swing at the weights.

Billy Loughnane was on board for the first time that day and he returns to have his first ride since a trip abroad, and it looks significant that he’s up again for shrewd connections. It’s hardly rocket science to suggest he has a big chance but if he performs how he did last time, I think he’ll win again before going up in grade to something more valuable. Maybe even the Lincoln back at a mile next month.

15:45 Newcastle – Pockley – 1pt @ 7/2

Pockley is exposed but he’s operating at a level that is as good as anything he has ever done and hopefully career win number five could come his way today. He ran a stormer in a higher grade than this over C&D last week, finishing less than a length behind Badri in a 0-95, and was a pound out of the handicap. 

Jonny Peate will be removing his 5lb claim this time as well – which could be a big help – and he was on board when the horse ran a cracker behind Pay For Adaay on his penultimate start. The two horses behind him have won since and I don’t think the opposition here are as tough to face. Hopefully all will go to plan and we’ll get to see Pockley score again. He deserves another win before too long.
