13:40 Pontefract – Ernest Rutherford – 1pt @ 14/1

Down in grade on his second start for Tim Easterby, Ernest Rutherford could be worth chancing with a small bet at 14/1. He looked promising in Ireland when winning second time up in 2021 but failed to get to that level since, only making it to the track twice last year. I thought his return at Beverley (one place ahead of Rambuso Creek) was encouraging enough, however, and he may be better for the run.

Like the later selection at Ascot, he was given nothing like a hard time and it was his first start for 336 days, so connections likely knew he was a step short anyway. That grade (0-90) would be hot enough for him even if fully wound up and he’s in a 0-75 now, which will make life easier. His rider can claim 8lbs due to the conditions of the race as well and if he is fitter now, he could trouble most of these.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:25 Pontefract – Western Stars – 1pt @ 10/1

Western Stars looked like he had the potential to improve at 1m 2f-ish and got the chance to show it in the latter stages of last season. He didn’t improve, however, racing too keenly to see his races out and that’s why I’m interested to see how he’ll get on back at a mile, where they should go a quicker gallop. Returning to this C&D is a major plus as well given how he finished his handicap debut last June.

He ended up winning by over a couple of lengths on that occasion, hitting the line very hard, and is just a few pounds higher now thanks to his struggles over further. It’s possible that he’ll have improved physically from 3 to 4 also, and Ed Dunlop’s yard are going along well enough to suggest he may be readied from his work at home. Either way, 9/1 or bigger covers the risk and he could get involved late.

15:50 Ascot – Bradsell – 1pt @ 9/4

Bradsell is not too difficult to find given he won last year’s Coventry! His sole start afterwards led to him going off as an 11/8 favourite for the Group 1 Phoenix and it didn’t go well, as he suffered a season-ending injury. On the plus side, his trainer is reportedly very happy with him now and he arrives here without any form of penalty, despite having already proven himself to be above Group 3 level.

Mischief Magic has done likewise, winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, but he’s penalised for that success and it will hopefully make his life difficult here! Bradsell has to prove he’s still up to the levels he was showing beforehand, and that he has trained on to 3, but hopefully that won’t be a problem and he can kickstart the year in style. He’s very talented and if he’s fit and well, he should be winning.

17:00 Ascot – Rambuso Creek – 1pt @ 9/1

Rambuso Creek was easy to back on his seasonal return at Beverley and anyone who watches the video of his run will see that there was no urgency to do anything of note. It’s likely he was expected to take a step forward for having had the outing and hopefully we’ll get to see his true worth now, as I reckon he’s definitely capable of winning off 80 and may enjoy the nature of racing at Ascot.

His peak efforts last season came on Pontefract’s turning track but he is a hold up performer and when he’s on song, he’s a good traveller. Stiff finishes are no problem and the only question I have is whether the pace will be strong enough. It’s tough to be definite but if things do pan out, he’s rated to do something more significant than was on show at Beverley. First-time cheekpieces may help, too.
