15:30 Leicester – Above – 1pt @ 11/2

Above made a promising return to action at Chelmsford but has gone backwards since, failing to land a blow on a couple of turf starts. However, they were in quality sprint handicaps at Newmarket and he was slow to stride both times. The softer ground conditions were unlikely to bring the best out in him either and there are enough excuses in place to suggest that he’s worth taking a chance on.

The handicapper is relenting his grip, lowering his mark by another 3lbs, and this represents a drop in grade into a 0-85. That’ll help, as will the quicker surface, and stepping up to 7f won’t do his chances any harm. If he behaves himself at the start and can find a better rhythm over these conditions, he has the ability to be a major threat to all. 11/2 is fair and this looks like a good race for him.

19:20 Wetherby – Sail On Silverbird – 1pt @ 17/2

Sail On Silverbird may be worth chancing on her turf and handicap debut. She ran about as well as could have been expected against two capable geldings at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago, not best positioned (off a slow pace) in comparison to the winner but still finished nicely. It was much more in line with her debut performance last November and hopefully could be built upon this time.

Michael Bell trained her dam to win three times and it’s worth noting that her best performance came on firm ground, so I’m expecting the switch over to fast turf can prove to be a positive. She also made a winning handicap debut and whilst it’s folly to place too much emphasis on it, history could repeat itself! Tudhope is a positive booking and the price is generous about one who has scope to improve.
