16:00 Lingfield – Alfdhal – 1pt @ 11/2
It’s possible the handicapper has caught Alfdhal following his five wins this winter but he has travelled so well on occasions over 6f that I wouldn’t be surprised if he has more to offer at the minimum trip. It’s just his second go at it and he was in there pitching for a long time on his first attempt at Newcastle last week, only fading away in the very late stages.
The trip was shorter than his usual so people may question why would he fade so quickly, but I wonder whether he’s best on speed tracks, which makes 5f around here an interesting prospect as it’s all about pace. He should get a good tow from Pop Dancer, and maybe Vespasian as well, and if he can finish his race out this time, he’s bound to be in there pitching late on. 5/1+ is fair enough for me.

16:35 Lingfield – Pablo Del Pueblo – 1pt @ 11/4
Pablo Del Pueblo is a ball of speed and it’s hard to believe than only 7 of his 25 career runs have come over the minimum trip. He ran himself into the ground over 6f here last time out, ending up three-lengths behind the reopposing Lilkian, but shaped well enough for long enough to suggest that he was still in good form and ready to score again when the right race is found.
This looks like it could be a good one for him and if he was able to be restrained early on, he could even take a lead from Battle Point. That may be an unlikely scenario as it’s hard to get one quick enough to lead him but he won at Kempton in January after racing in mid-div (missed the break) and clearly doesn’t have to go forward. Whatever happens, he must have a big chance back to 5f.
17:10 Lingfield – Pandemic Princess – 1pt @ 40/1
Pandemic Princess is a huge price and there’s good reason for that, as she lost her way completely for Alice Haynes after initially making a promising start when second at Chelmsford. Why she dropped her level so much is beyond me but there were a few more hints of life when trying 5f again in first-time blinkers at Wolverhampton in January, where she was beaten less than four-lengths.
Reverting to 6f will help her cause and the interesting angle today is the trainer switch off a break, as she now debuts for Charlie Wallis. Her big run for the previous yard came when fresh and that, combined with a change of scenery, could help perk her back to life. She’s running off 57 in the lowest grade she has ever tackled and for all that she may tail off again, 40/1 is worth a small dart.
19:00 Southwell – Jilly Cooper – 1pt @ 9/1
I’ve backed Jilly Cooper twice and she has won both times, so here’s hoping for the hat-trick! She’s a smooth-moving filly, acts well off both strong and slower paces, and I don’t think she’s impossibly treated off 85 despite it being a career-high. Indeed, she was unlucky not to win off it two starts ago at Lingfield when held in her run and it won’t take a major step up on that effort to be competitive here.
This is a higher grade but she took in a Class 2 last time out when ridden further forward than usual and that didn’t seem to suit, for all that the front two would likely out-class her regardless. Oliver Stammers hopping on board again is a positive as he knows exactly what she needs and although this is a good race, and she has to prove herself on this track, 8/1+ might underestimate her true chance.
20:00 Southwell – Roman Dynasty – 1pt @ 6/1
Roman Dynasty won on his debut in 2020 and has been defeated 24 times in a row since. Not exactly the most encouraging of signs but he’s down to a career-low mark of 69 and caught my eye under a considerate ride from Jason Watson over C&D two weeks ago. He didn’t have a great position to work from having been drawn wide so was never going to get close, but it was a run he should build on.
Given that he hadn’t raced in over 100 days, his fitness is likely to be a lot better and the booking of Jamie Spencer catches the eye. He has had nine rides for the yard and whilst only one has managed to win, eight of them have been in the first four. The horse can travel well so he should suit Spencer’s style and if the gallop is stronger this time, he’s bound to have a chance of picking them up late on.
