13:40 Thirsk – Ballintoy Harbour – 1pt @ 25/1

Ballintoy Harbour is a speculative selection as she was poor on her return at Pontefract but that did come after 240 days away from the track and Paul Midgley’s runners tend to tighten up a lot for a spin. Indeed, the yard have had seven winners this flat season to date and all bar one of those came in the last couple of weeks. Now is the time to be keeping an eye on anything they’re sending out.

This mare was promising early doors, especially during the first half of her 3-year-old season in 2021, but dropped her level last year and only had a 0-65 win on the All-Weather to her name. On the plus side, she’s unquestionably well-handicapped if there could be a proper revival and this level is more suitable than what she tackled last time. Faster ground is a help and the price is worth the risk.

15:40 Thirsk – James Watt – 1pt @ 14/1

James Watt is another of Midgley’s runners on the card and he could be a value alternative to a favourite who deserves to be short but faces more depth than he did when winning last week. Four runs this season has yielded very little of note for the selection but he’s rated all the way down at 60 and this time last year he was winning easily off 73 before peaking at 82. It has been a fair drop!

If we break down this season’s efforts, two have been on the All-Weather (one after a break and the next after a wind-op) and two on turf. Both turf runs came on soft and heavy, the most recent without his regular cheekpieces. They’re back on now, he’ll be happier on a faster surface and this is a first ever drop into the 0-65 grade. If he isn’t gone at the game altogether, there’s plenty in his favour.

16:40 Thirsk – Dream Together – 1pt @ 5/1

Dream Together flopped a bit when I backed him at Haydock in April but was reported to have made a noise and had a wind-op in the following days. That could put him back on the straight and narrow, and if he can perform to his true level then he’ll be hard beaten here. He’s a C&D winner as well, scoring off 15lbs higher in 2021, and this type of track on a quick surface suits him perfectly.

It’s a while since he has operated at his best but this will be his first go in a turf handicap at Class 6 level and even on last season’s form, he’s capable of performing above it without much trouble. A lot will depend on how effective the breathing tweak has been (had one before but didn’t get his ground after) but assuming all is good there, he’ll take a lot beating. The price isn’t mind-blowing but it’ll do!
