French Open Prediction: Magic Musetti Ready For Novak
Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record-breaking 25th grand slam title has got off to a steady enough start with a pair of straight-sets victories, but the difficulty level steps up significantly when he faces Lorenzo Musetti.
Cast your mind back three years, and a teenage Musetti gave Djokovic a torrid time at the French Open, racing into a 2-0 lead before eventually having to retire hurt in the fifth set.
Djokovic has won three of their four meetings since then, including a straight-sets victory at Monte Carlo in May but this match figures to be a closer contest.
Musetti enjoyed a strong build-up to the French Open, reaching the final of a pair of Challenger events in Cagliari and Turin, and has looked in good touch in Paris.
His second-round win over home hero Gael Monfils was impressive and he has the tools to challenge Djokovic.
The top seed is a little more vulnerable than he used to be and the minimum expected of Musetti is to avoid a straight-sets defeat, with the potential for more if he’s on song.
The Panel Tip 1: Lorenzo Musetti +2.5 Sets Vs Novak Djokovic – 8/11 With QuinnBet
Struff Has The Stuff To Upset De Minaur
At 34, most players are thinking about wrapping up their tennis careers, but not Jan-Lennard Struff, who has arguably hit peak form over the last 12 months.
He’s been to three finals in the last year and won his first ATP Tour singles title in Munich before the French Open.
The German has had a pair of routine wins in Paris, hitting an impressive 54 winners in his second-round victory over Alexander Bublik, and his reward is a third-round clash with Alex De Minaur.
The Aussie is also yet to drop a set at Roland Garros but doesn’t appeal as the odds-on favourite on betting sites against an opponent who won their only previous meeting on clay.
De Minaur’s French Open record doesn’t inspire confidence either and The Panel are happy to take a chance on Struff maintaining his purple patch.
The Panel Tip 2: Jan-Lennard Struff To Beat Alex De Minaur – 26/25 With BetUK
Improving Andreescu Should Push Paolini
Having not won a game in 10 months before the French Open, Bianca Andreescu made it two wins in three days with a three-set victory over Anna Kalinskaya.
The Panel had highlighted the Canadian’s potential to beat the Russian, and she duly delivered as she continues to find her feet after a rotten run of injuries.
It wasn’t plain sailing for the 23-year-old as she dropped the first set and she’ll need to elevate her game for a meeting with clay-court specialist and 12th seed Jasmine Paolini.
The Italian is having a great year, reaching the fourth round in Australia, winning her second singles title in Dubai and climbing to a career-high ranking of 12th.
She’s the heavy favourite on betting apps but Andreescu has shown she’s one of the best in the world on her day and The Panel expect this to be far closer than the prices would suggest.
Paolini and Andreescu have similar strengths, possessing solid serves and powerful forehands which could translate to a pretty lengthy contest.
Their first two matches at the French Open featured no fewer than 19 games, and there's a chance that number will climb slightly higher in this third-round meeting.
The Panel Tip 3: Over 21.5 Games In Bianca Andreescu Vs Jasmine Paolini – Evens With 10Bet
