Scottie Scheffler Grand Slam Odds: Can American Win Four Majors In 2024?
UK betting sites have reacted to Scottie Scheffler’s remarkable start to the year by opening markets on the world number one bagging a clean sweep of major victories in a calendar year.
Scheffler followed up his US Masters success with a fourth win in five tournaments at the weather-hit Heritage and comparisons with Tiger Woods in his pomp are starting to look well founded.
The American is favourite to win each of the remaining three majors and can be backed at 40/1 with Ladbrokes to add the USPGA Championship, US Open and The Open to his ever-improving CV in 2024.
The same bookmaker is offering 15/2 that he wins a total of three majors this year, 13/8 on a couple and 3/4 that he fails to add to his Augusta triumph.
It’s a tall order to win the grand slam, but we’re examining his prospects of becoming only the second player in history to bag a full house of majors.
Can Scottie Scheffler Win Grand Slam?
Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen and Bobby Jones all won the four majors at some point in their careers – and Rory McIlroy hopes to join that illustrious list one day by finally capturing the US Masters.
But only Jones, in 1930, managed the feat in the same season when the US and British Amateur Championships were regarded as majors and their formats were - and remain - matchplay rather than strokeplay.
In modern times, high-profile defections to LIV Golf have muddied the waters, but Scheffler dominated the likes of Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau at Augusta, simultaneously shooting down Joaquin Niemann's claim the world rankings were a "lie".
Fatherhood Could Scupper Grand Slam Bid
Scheffler has already completed the first leg of his major mission, but number two has been complicated by the fact his wife is soon expected to give birth to their first child ahead of the USPGA Championship in mid-May.
There are many who regard the ‘Nappy Factor’ as a positive and that new or expectant fathers improve their performances which does not bode well for the rest of the field.
The stars have also aligned in terms of his schedule, bearing in mind Scheffler skipped the two-man team event at the Zurich Classic, and the Byron Nelson in the following week will take place in Dallas where he lives, so travel should be kept to a minimum.
Whether he gives the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow a miss in the week before the year’s second major remains to be seen, but he will be keen to compete in the sixth Signature Event of the season.
Scheffler’s previous results at the USPGA Championship are ominous, posting three top-10s from his four appearances and last year he was runner-up to Koepka by a couple of shots.
His imperious form suggests his competitors will be playing second fiddle at Valhalla where McIlroy won the last of his major titles 10 years ago, so it’s well worth considering the 4/1 on offer with Betfred.
US Open Holds No Fear For Great Scottie
The US Open traditionally penalises errant drives with long rough off the fairway, but Scheffler’s tee-to-green numbers this year are astonishing.
Golf betting sites have Scheffler as a red-hot favourite to win in June when hopefully he will have caught up on his sleep.
Scheffler has finished no lower than seventh in his last three US Open outings and the fact he leads the Strokes Gained: tee-to-green metric by almost a shot per round this season tells its own story.
LIV golfers will be able to compete at Pinehurst as long as they meet the qualification criteria, so a tough test awaits, but it’s only a matter of time before he adds the US Open to his collection.
BetVictor is offering 18/1 that Scheffler wins all three US-based majors this year as a special, but he can be backed at just under 24/1 with Ladbrokes if combining the odds individually.
Open And Shut Case?
Should Scheffler still be on course to make history, he may come unstuck at The Open which this year takes place at Royal Troon in July.
Scheffler has struggled to improve on his eighth-placed finish on his tournament debut at Royal St Georges in 2021, failing to break the top 20 on subsequent appearances at St Andrews and Hoylake.
Despite those misses, Scheffler finished third at last year’s Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, so he can handle links golf, but this looks a bridge too far in a year when his world will change forever.
BoyleSports are a best-priced 11/2 for Scheffler to master the South Ayrshire links which is similar to the Old Course, but it may pay dividends to look elsewhere for players who like playing in the wind and have greater experience on links courses.
