How to Watch Commanders vs. Eagles

The Commanders (2-1; 1-2 ATS) have outlasted a couple of bad teams in the first two weeks, edging the Arizona Cardinals 20-16 as 7-point home favorites and the Denver Broncos 35-33 as 4-point road dogs. Last Sunday, the Commanders had their first proper test of the season and suffered a heavy 37-3 home loss against the Buffalo Bills. 

Sam Howell put on a terrible performance in Week 4. He went 19-of-29 for 170 yards and four interceptions, and the Bills sacked Howell a whopping nine times. On the other side of the ball, the Commanders’ defense fought bravely for three quarters before yielding 21 points in the fourth. Washington is now 2-6 ATS in its last eight games overall, and the Commanders have only covered once in their previous five tilts against the NFC.  

Key Players Missing: S Percy Butler (questionable, foot) 

The Eagles (3-0; 2-0-1 ATS) are riding a three-game winning streak. After a 25-20 win at the New England Patriots in their season opener and a 34-28 victory to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, the Eagles easily defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 25-11 last Monday, covering a 5.5-point on the road. Philadelphia outgained Tampa Bay 472-174 in total yards, and the Eagles rolled over the Bucs with 40 carries for 201 yards. 

Jalen Hurts was picked off twice in Week 4. He completed 23 of his 37 passing attempts for 277 yards and a touchdown while carrying the pigskin ten times for 28 yards and a TD. The Eagles are now 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games overall. They’ve beaten the number in four of their previous five outings in October, and the betting trends are backing my NFL week 4 predictions and picks for Week 4 clash between the Commanders and Eagles.  

Key Players Missing: Justin Evans (questionable, neck), Sydney Brown (questionable, hamstring), DeVonta Smith (questionable, illness) 

Covering a 9-point spread is often a tricky task, but there’s no way I’m going to back the Commanders with Sam Howell under center. Furthermore, the Commanders could easily struggle to contain the Eagles’ ground game which is one of the best in the NFL. The Commanders’ offensive line will have another long day in the office, and Sam Howell will once more fight for his life. I’m expecting the Eagles to win this battle in the trenches. They will continue to run as much as possible, and the Commanders just yielded 168 rushing yards (5.1 per carry) to the Bills. Philadelphia’s ground game will dominate this matchup, so my best NFL prediction is the Eagles -9.0 at BetMGM. 

⭐ Over 43.0 (-110) at Caesars

The totals are a tricky bet in this game. On paper, the Commanders are a better defensive team than their results indicate, and the Eagles could easily shut down Washington just like Buffalo did in Week 3. I’m still taking Over 43.0 Points (-110) at Caesars as my second Commanders vs. Eagles pick, expecting the hosts to surpass a 30-point mark.

Last year, AJ Brown scored his first touchdown against the Commanders in Week 3. He finished the 2022 season with 11 touchdowns and didn’t have a three-game scoring drought. Brown, who had nine catches for 131 yards against the Buccaneers last Monday, is scoreless through the first three weeks of the 2023 NFL season, and that will change sooner rather than later.
