West Virginia Online Casinos Generate $17.9 Million in May 2024

The West Virginia online casino industry has slowed a bit since March’s record-breaking month of about $20.68 million, but May saw a bit of a resurgence.

May 2024 figures are in and according to the West Virginia Lottery, the online casinos in the state combined for $17.9 million. It was just a 0.007% increase compared to April.

Even with such a modest increase, this marked the second-best month in the state’s history for online casino revenue, trailing March’s $20.68 million.

The top licensee in West Virginia was Hollywood Charles Town, which has DraftKings Casino WV under its umbrella. That license alone posted $7.4 million in revenue.

Greenbrier, which houses BetMGM and FanDuel, is just behind them at $6.4 million.

In all, there are four licensees in the state, and here’s how they shook out:

  • Hollywood Charles Town: $7,408,289
  • Greenbrier: $6,427,087
  • Mountaineer: $3,398,873
  • Mardi Gras: $698,033

It’s unknown what each individual site generated, as those figures aren’t reported in West Virginia.

Online casino play generates more tax than the online sports betting market.

For comparison, online sportsbooks in the state generated just under $33 million in handle but $3.7 million in revenue. The tax was $370,762.

As for online casinos, the tax paid was $2,689,842.

In the sports betting realm, Hollywood Charles Town also tops those figures with nearly $15 million in handle but just $1.349 million in revenue compared to Greenbrier’s $2 million.

We’ll look now to June 2024 to see if the state can break its record of $20.68 million set in March.
