2022 Heisman Trophy Watch: The Favorites Stumble, Door Opens for Others
As November continues, the 2022 Heisman Trophy Watch rolls on. Who are we watching this week? Who is trending up or down?
Every Monday, at Gambling.com, we will look at some prominent names while maybe finding a gem or two. Anyway, here is the latest.
Bryce Young - Alabama Crimson Tide (+2500 on DraftKings)
Young was off on Saturday with his throws. He completed 25 of 51 passes, but everyone will talk about two. Alabama lost 32-31 in overtime to LSU (LSU successfully got a 2-point conversion to win the game). Young will need help if the Crimson Tide are going to play one more game. A Heisman repeat may hinge on whether Alabama gets into the SEC Championship game.
C.J. Stroud - Ohio State Buckeyes (+180 on DraftKings)
Stroud was irked by the windy conditions on Saturday. Ohio State won by two scores, but it was ugly. Stroud ran for 79 yards but passed for just 76. The excuses need to stop, but the quarterback still leads the Heisman race. Michigan looms on Nov. 26.
Caleb Williams - USC Fighting Trojans (+700 on DraftKings)
Williams did what he was supposed to against Cal on Saturday. He threw for 360 yards and four touchdowns, then ran for another as USC held on for a 41-35 win. Next is Colorado, which should be another chance to pad those numbers. UCLA and now Notre Dame may prove to be stages where Williams could get a boost.
Max Duggan - TCU Horned Frogs (+4000 on DraftKings)
The quarterback endured a below-average week as he tossed two touchdowns but threw for only 195 yards. TCU travels to Texas this week. Duggan needs to put up better numbers.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson - UCLA Bruins (+5000 on DraftKings)
DTR had four touchdowns (two rushing, two passing). He totaled 289 yards, 120 of them via the ground. He remains on the fringe of the Heisman race. It’s all about USC in a couple of weeks.
Hendon Hooker - Tennessee Volunteers (+280 on DraftKings)
Georgia contained Hooker until the game was decided. Hooker was held without a touchdown and under 200 yards passing. Despite 18 carries, Hooker gained just 17 yards. The Tennessee quarterback needs some help and a Georgia loss potentially to give him one extra showcase game.
Blake Corum - Michigan Wolverines (+750 on DraftKings)
Corum had an easy week with just 20 carries and 105 yards against Rutgers. He scored twice, though, which keeps his Heisman hopes alive. Big games against Illinois and then Ohio State are on the horizon.
Bo Nix - Oregon (+800 on DraftKings)
Nix piled up the numbers on Saturday against Colorado. Yes, he totaled just 308 yards. However, Nix ran for two touchdowns, passed for two, and even caught one. Nix sees Washington this week before clashes with Utah and Oregon State. The signal-caller will have plenty of chances to impress voters.
Jayden Daniels - LSU (+2000 on DraftKings)
All Daniels did was beat Alabama in a game LSU was not supposed to win. The 182 yards passing was OK, but the 95 yards and a rushing touchdown were. Daniels had three touchdowns as LSU controls its destiny in the SEC West. Few expected that after their start to the season.
Stetson Bennett - Georgia (+1600 on DraftKings)
Again, Bennett only looks great sometimes, but he sure shows up on the biggest stages. Bennett scored three times, threw for 257 yards, and led Georgia to a 27-13 win over Tennessee. With that, the Bulldogs almost certainly will see the conference title game, which means more eyes on the quarterback.
Jalin Hyatt - Tennessee (+10000 on DraftKings)
Hyatt was finally contained by a team, as the wide receiver only caught six balls for 63 yards against Georgia. That may be enough to finish any slight chance he had of going to New York.
Drake Maye - North Carolina (+1200 on DraftKings)
Maybe Maye has a shot at this after all. North Carolina keeps games very close. The Tar Heels do not have a good defense, so Maye must keep airing the ball out. He is a freshman, by the way. The quarterback has nearly 3,000 yards passing and over 500 rushing (31 passing scores, four rushing touchdowns). As long as Carolina keeps winning, Maye still has a chance.
