How to Read NFL Coach of the Year Odds

The odds above indicate the likelihood of a head coach to be named the Coach of the Year for the season. The odds, presented in the moneyline format, fluctuate throughout the season based on the performance of the coach's team.

Negative odds indicate the favorite(s) to win the award. If a coach's odds were -150, for example, you would need to bet $150 to win $100. The lower the number, the more heavily favored that coach is to win.

Positive odds indicate the underdogs to win the award. If a coach's odds were +600 and you bet $100 on that coach, you would win $600 if they won.

The criteria for being nominated for the NFL Coach of the Year award is imprecise. Factors that voters consider include first-year impact, exceeding expectations, and improving upon the success of the previous year. Although he had already won Coach of the Year in 2020, last year's winner Kevin Stefanski was handed the award again in large part because he helped his team reach the playoffs despite having to start five different quarterbacks through the course of the regular season.

Other notable NFL Coach of the Year award trends and facts:

  • The NFL's winningest coach Don Shula has won the award the most times (4). Bill Belichick and Chuck Knox are tied for second, each receiving the honor three times.
  • Since 2000, Belichick is the only coach to win the award and the Super  Bowl in the same season (2003).
  • Only one coach (Jimmy Johnson in 1990) has won the award with a losing record.
  • No head coach has ever been voted Coach of the Year unanimously, though Shula came the closest in 1964.
