The Comeback Player of the Year award is selected by a panel of 50 sportswriters, who cast their votes at the end of the regular season. They submit a ranked ballot of their top three choices for the best performance of a player coming back from adversity (injury, subpar play, etc.) in the previous season.

How to Read NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds

The odds above indicate the likelihood of an individual player to be named the Comeback Player of the Year for the season. The odds, presented in the moneyline format, fluctuate throughout the season based on players' performances, injuries, and other factors.

Negative odds indicate the favorite(s) to win the award. If a player's odds were -150, for example, you would need to bet $150 to win $100. The lower the number, the more heavily favored that player is to win.

Positive odds indicate the underdogs to win the award. If a player's odds were +600 and you bet $100 on that player, you would win $600 if they won.

The criteria for being nominated for the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award is nebulous. However, it is generally given to a player who has returned after a serious, season-ending injury to perform at a high level the following season. In fact, since 2000, 16 players who won the award were coming back from injuries the previous year. However, this is not always the case. For instance, Joe Flacco, last year's winner, was considered an emergency backup at the tail end of his career before taking over as starter and leading the Browns to the playoffs.

Other notable NFL Comeback Player of the Year award trends and facts:

  • Chad Pennington is the only player to have won the award more than once (2006 & 2008).
  • No player has ever been voted Comeback Player of the Year unanimously.
  • 2005 is the only year the award has been shared.  Tedy Bruschi and Steve Smith Sr. both received 18 votes.
  • Flacco is the only player to win Comeback Player of the Year and win Super Bowl MVP in a previous season (2013).
