NHL Picks: Who Wins Battle Between Detroit and New Jersey?
The NHL swings upward with 10 games on Tuesday night. If this trend continues, hockey fans should stay happy.
Let’s take a quick tour of tonight’s schedule from a notable games standpoint to get you ready for your NHL betting.
New Jersey Devils at Detroit Red Wings
If you liked offense in the wrong direction, Monday’s New Jersey and Washington game was the one. The teams combined for nine goals and it felt like every Devils' scoring chance allowed in the second period found the back of the net. New Jersey was down 5-1 before mounting a late comeback that fell well short.
Detroit is rested and is enjoying an excellent start to the season. The Red Wings are 3-0-2 and 2-0-1 at home. New Jersey has the speed to burn and can shoot the puck. Their accuracy is questionable, and they were 8-21-5 on the back end of back-to-backs over the last two seasons.
Dallas Stars at Boston Bruins
The old Tyler Seguin versus Boston narrative gets dredged tonight as Dallas travels to Boston right after losing to Ottawa last night. Jake Oettinger will be in the goal tonight for the Stars. Linus Ullmark might get the nod for the Bruins. That is partly why the Over at 6.5 goals is dead Even right now.
Boston and Dallas have had some games where goals have been exchanged plenty. This could turn into a wild affair in time.
Arizona Coyotes at Columbus Blue Jackets
Two of the worst defenses in the NHL battle on Tuesday night at Columbus. It will be interesting to see who starts in the net for the Blue Jackets. Daniil Tarasov has just one win in his first three starts, but Tarasov has looked better than Elvis Merzlikins this season.
Arizona allows 5.2 goals per game while scoring just 2.6 per contest on offense. Combine that with shaky special teams and Columbus’ track record, and anyone can see why this is currently the only Over/Under set at 7.0 goals. That +105 is just being dangled out there.
Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers
The high-powered matchup between Colorado and New York figures to see a little of everything. Alexandar Georgiev comes back to Gotham after being Igor Shesterkin’s understudy. Also, Shesterkin has not been his usual self to start 2022-23. Despite being 3-0-1, last year’s Vezina Trophy winner has only a .901 save percentage in the early going. Georgiev’s numbers are similar, with a .908 save percentage.
Colorado is giving up power-play goals in bunches. The Rangers’ man advantage is quite good with Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, and Chris Kreider on one unit. On the other hand, can New York slow down Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon? This is the game of the night for a good reason.
Florida Panthers at Chicago Blackhawks
Another wild night might be in store for Chicago as the Florida Panthers come to town. The game between Florida and the Blackhawks is flipping between an Over of 6.5 and 7.0. Keep an eye on this contest.
Sergei Bobrovsky and Alex Stalock are projected to start in goal for the respective teams. Florida is without Aaron Ekblad and a big chunk of their defense, so this could be an offense is the best defense kind of game. Usually, that translates into more goals scored.
Buffalo Sabres at Seattle Kraken
Can the Buffalo Sabres continue their excellent October? Eric Comrie could get the start tonight for the Sabres. Check back to see who winds up starting for Seattle. Martin Jones is expected to be in the nets.
Either way, Seattle is a team that can dominate for stretches but gives up goals in bunches. That was on full display in Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Seattle was the better team but lost 5-4 behind two segments where they kept making mistakes. The first led to two goals that erased a 2-0 lead. The second caused the Kraken to lose their one-goal lead and the game.
That is why Buffalo has a fighting chance here.
