Christian Eriksen Next Club Odds: Man United Favourites To Sign Him
The race to sign Christian Eriksen appeared to be between two clubs, but betting sites believe the saga has taken another twist in recent days.
Manchester United and Brentford now face further competition to land the Denmark international before the start of next season.
Eriksen’s successful return to the Premier League was one of the stories of the 2021/22 campaign.
After he was forced to leave Inter due to Italian regulations that prohibit sportspeople fitted with implantable cardioverter defibrillators from playing professionally, Eriksen signed for Brentford at the end of the January transfer window.
Given it was only a little over six months since the attacking midfielder had suffered an on-field cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, no one knew how he would get on. Within a few weeks though, it was clear that Eriksen was back to his very best.
He was arguably the most influential figure in the entire division in the second half of last season, steering Brentford clear of the relegation zone and into the sanctuary of mid-table.
The Dane only signed a short-term deal with the Bees and he will officially become a free agent on July 1.
With Premier League clubs set to return for pre-season training from this week onwards, we can expect Eriksen to make a decision soon.
So, where will the 30-year-old end up? Let’s take a look at the odds on betting apps before we analyse all the main options.
Manchester United Remain In Pole Position To Sign Eriksen
Manchester United are the 4/6 favourites on football betting sites to land Eriksen.
It has been a tricky start to the summer for the Red Devils, who are yet to bring in any new faces despite the exits of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic.
Man United are working hard on transfer deals to sign Antony and Frenkie de Jong, but Eriksen’s status as a free agent means his situation is far more straightforward.
Despite their recent struggles United are still one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they would be able to pay Eriksen much more than Brentford. They could also offer him Europa League football, while the midfielder shares Ajax connections with Erik ten Hag.
On the other hand, very few players have improved at Old Trafford in recent years, and Eriksen might be concerned that he could be sucked into the wider malaise that has engulfed the 20-time English champions.
Brentford Hope Eriksen Will Choose Continuity
Whatever happens from here, Eriksen will always be grateful to Brentford for the opportunity they gave him last season.
The move was such a success that the Denmark international is seriously considering signing another deal with the Bees, hence odds of 5/2 with Unibet on a return to west London.
Eriksen and his family are settled in the capital and Brentford’s employment of six other Danish players, plus Thomas Frank, means it is a good fit.
The team would be built around Eriksen, who would be guaranteed to start whenever fit. That could be particularly important with the 2022 World Cup on the horizon.
Yet Brentford could be involved in a Premier League relegation battle next season, and Eriksen might prefer to ply his trade higher up the table.
Newcastle’s Price Tumbles Amid Rumours Of An Offer
Newcastle’s odds have been slashed from 25/1 to 7/1 after UK bookmakers reacted to reports that the club have made an approach for Eriksen.
Eddie Howe is looking to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe next season, and the Dane might find the chance to join a club on the up appealing.
One doubt is the location, with Eriksen thought to favour clubs who are further south than Newcastle in England.
However, a sufficiently attractive pay packet would likely be enough for the former Inter man to move to the northeast – and the Saudi Arabia-owned Newcastle would have no trouble in that regard.
Tottenham Could Have Edge If They Decide To Join The Race
Tottenham are currently available at 12/1 with Betfair, but that price could fall quickly if Antonio Conte makes it clear to his superiors that he would like Eriksen to be a part of his squad.
The player himself would surely relish the chance to re-join his old club. Eriksen must feel he has unfinished business at Spurs after failing to win a trophy the first time around, while he would also get the chance to play in the Champions League again and remain with his family in London.
Conte worked with Eriksen at Inter and he could conclude that the 30-year-old would have something to offer next season.
As things stand though, Spurs are only the fourth-favourites to sign the man who has been capped 115 times by Denmark.
Liverpool Among A Group Of Outsiders
Liverpool are distant betting at 33/1 with BetVictor. Jurgen Klopp will need to refresh his midfield either this summer or next, with Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and James Milner all over 30.
Eriksen, for all his qualities, does not look like a natural fit for a Klopp team, which is probably why Liverpool have stayed on the sidelines so far.
A late swoop is not impossible, but given that Eriksen has been available for a while now, the Reds would surely have made a move already if they were interested.
The same can be said for Manchester City, available at whopping 50/1 with 10Bet.
It is easier to imagine Eriksen playing for Pep Guardiola than Klopp, but the Premier League champions are focusing their efforts on landing Kalvin Phillips. Once that deal is done, Guardiola will probably be happy with his midfield options.
Leicester and Everton (both 33/1) are thought to be on the lookout for new midfielders, but it is hard to see either club usurping the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham, Brentford or Newcastle at this stage.
