Next Liverpool Manager Odds: Who Will Replace Jurgen Klopp At Anfield?
Liverpool bounced back from their Europa League exit with a 3-1 win at Fulham, to keep alive their Premier League hopes.
Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota by the banks of Thames moved them level with leaders Arsenal on 74 points, a point clear of defending champions Manchester City, who have played a game fewer.
Betting sites have Liverpool as 5/1 third favourites, with City leading the market at 6/10 and Arsenal 7/2.
Following Jurgen Klopp's decision to step down at the end of the season, the Anfield club will want to send the German off with a second Premier League title.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again,” Klopp said in January.
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”
But who will replace Klopp in the Anfield dugout next season? Let’s take a look at the leading candidates.
Amorim Is The New Favourite For Anfield Job
Ruben Amorim is not letting speculation linking him with the Liverpool vacancy disrupt Sporting Lisbon's title charge.
The Portuguese side have won their last six league games and are 10 points clear of second-placed Benfica with four games to play, although their rivals do have a game in hand.
Amorim remains the clear favourite at 1/3 on betting apps to be handed the Liverpool job when Klopp walks away.
Winning the Portuguese title would boost Amorim's chances.
Arne Slot Enters The Market
This time last year, it looked as though Arne Slot would be moving to the Premier League. The 45-year-old was heavily linked with the vacancy at Tottenham before Ange Postecoglou was given the job.
Slot's reputation grew last season as he guided Feyenoord to their 16th title, finishing seven points clear of PSV Eindhoven.
PSV have turned the tables this season and they look set to win the Eredivisie title ahead of Feyenoord.
Nevertheless, interest in Slot remains high and he is now the 6/1 second favourite to replace Klopp at Anfield.
Alonso Drops Down The Market
Xabi Alonso's odds have drifted with football betting sites and is now 28/1 as Klopp's replacement next season.
The Spaniard guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in what is turning out to be a remarkable season.
Leverkusen are on the verge of completing a treble, and if they avoid defeat in their final seven league and cup games, they will go the entire season undefeated.
Understandably, many Liverpool fans and former players wants Alonso in charge next season.
Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb told Gambling.com exclusively: "Clearly, the party line is Xabi Alonso. I think reading between the lines Bayern Munich are going to make a move for him first.
"He looks tactically, very good, in a Bundesliga where Bayern Munich aren’t firing on all cylinders this year. So I would like to see him there (at Anfield) – but I think next season might be a season too early.
Alonso made 143 league appearances for Liverpool and would no doubt relish the chance to return to Anfield one day.
De Zerbi Remains Linked With Liverpool Switch
Roberto de Zerbi's future remains uncertain, even though he pledged his future to Brighton recently saying "no team that can change my mind."
The Italian is contracted to the Seagulls until the end of next season, and until a new contract is signed, he will remain linked with a number of vacancies, including Liverpool.
De Zerbi (12/1) has the Premier League coaching experience that Alonso lacks and a strong finish to the campaign will strengthen his case in any interviews he might get.
Brighton have coped well with the demands of European football this season, but failure to qualify for Europe next season could see De Zerbi explore other options.
Tuchel Could Be A Contender
Thomas Tuchel (20/1) has emerged as a potential replacement for his compatriot after Bayern Munich revealed that he will depart the German outfit at the end of the 2023/24 season.
The league has been one to forget for Bayern who were looking to win the Bundesliga for the 12th successive season, but there is a chance Tuchel could leave with a trophy.
Bayern's reward for knocking Arsenal out of the Champions League, is a semi-final against Real Madrid, who are favourites on betting apps to be crowned champions of Europe for a 15th time.
Available as a free agent, Tuchel may be worth keeping tabs on as the season draws to a close.
Zidane And Emery Among Dark Horses As Things Stand
Zinedine Zidane has emerged as a possible contender, with the Frenchman available at 33/1 with Bet365.
The former France international won two La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues across two spells as Real Madrid boss, but he is untested outside of Madrid.
He has also been out of the dugout for more than two years, which suggests he is more than happy to bide his time before returning to management.
When chatting to Babb about who may potentially take over, he said: "I think the main message is whoever comes in isn’t going to be Jurgen - so he needs a bit of a time.
"Is he going to rebuild? Is he a short-term solution? Is it a five, six, seven-year project like Jurgen had? So it’s a very difficult decision, and massive shoes to fill."
Another high-flying manager in the Premier League, Unai Emery, is linked with the Anfield vacancy.
The Spaniard is doing a remarkable job both domestically and in Europe with Aston Villa, and he is also a 28/1 shot to up sticks and join the Reds in the summer.
Gerrard And Xavi Unlikely To Be Seriously Considered
At one point it seemed like Steven Gerrard was destined to succeed Klopp as Liverpool boss.
A club legend and one of its greatest ever players, the former Reds captain is always welcome back at Anfield, however, his last two managerial jobs have been questionable to say the least.
Gerrard struggled at Aston Villa and he is now in charge of Al-Ettifaq, who sit seventh in the Saudi Pro League at the time of writing. That will count against Gerrard, who is available at 33/1.
Another name in the frame to be Liverpool manager is Xavi Hernandez. It came as a shock when Xavi announced he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
The former Spain midfielder said: "As a Culé, I think that it's time to leave. I spoke with the board and the club today. I will leave on the 30th of June”.
In a bizarre set of circumstances, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Klopp and Xavi (33/1) swap dugouts for the start of the 2024/25 season.
