Youri Tielemans Next Club Odds: Newcastle Top The List To Buy Him

The January transfer window is in full swing and Youri Tielemans is among the players being linked with a move away from his current employers by the media and betting sites alike.

The Leicester City midfielder is out of contract in the summer, so his suitors are eyeing a cut-price deal in the mid-season market. 

Brendan Rodgers will not want to lose one of his key players at this stage of the campaign, but the decision could be taken out of the under-fire manager’s hands.

Newcastle Could Look To Strengthen Their Top-Four Push

Newcastle United are ahead of schedule. They began the campaign hoping to challenge for Europa League qualification, but expectations have been adjusted after a tremendous first half of the season. 

The Magpies are third in the table as things stand, and they appear to be genuine contenders in the Premier League top four betting odds.

Eddie Howe will no doubt be pleading with the club’s Saudi owners for cash to spend in January, although Newcastle will also be wary of Financial Fair Play regulations. 

However, given that Tielemans could be available for an affordable price, the Magpies could renew their interest in him this month. 

As such, Newcastle are the 5/1 favourites with Paddy Power to land the former Monaco man.

Arsenal Could Do With More Depth In Midfield

Arsenal are in a similar position to Newcastle, having exceeded expectations up to now. 

They could spend more in January than they initially anticipated in a bid to boost their chances of winning the title.

The Premier League leaders are given a 6/1 shot of signing Tielemans by football betting sites. 

Mykhailo Mudryk, the Shakhtar Donetsk winger, remains at the top of their transfer wish list, but Arsenal could switch their attention to other targets if the Ukrainian outfit continue to play hardball.

There is notable lack of depth in midfield at the Emirates Stadium, and Tielemans would provide welcome competition for the likes of Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey - the latter of whom is somewhat injury-prone.

Liverpool Also Need To Refresh Their Options In Central Areas

Liverpool made Cody Gakpo their first signing of the January window, but midfield is the area of their squad that needs strengthening the most. 

With James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara all the wrong side of 30 and Naby Keita out of contract in the summer, the Reds could be in the market for as many as three new midfielders this year.

However, odds of 10/1 with BetVictor suggest Tielemans is unlikely to end up at Anfield at the end of this month. 

Liverpool do not have a bottomless pit of money to spend, and Gakpo could be their sole acquisition in the winter window.

Even if Jurgen Klopp does push for more incomings, he could target a central defender after Virgil van Dijk sustained an injury in the 3-1 loss to Brentford on Monday.

Manchester United outsiders in the race at this stage

Tielemans has been linked with Man Utd’s transfer plans in the past, but a price of 12/1 is evidence of the fact that they do not look set to join the race for the midfielder’s signature. 

There are a few reasons for that. Firstly, United are reasonably well stocked in the centre of the park. 

Scott McTominay and Fred have been criticised in the past, but they are perfectly reasonable back-up options to Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

Secondly, Erik ten Hag’s side have other priorities and they will supposedly focus their attention this month on signing a new striker rather than another central midfielder. 

And finally (on a related note), reports suggest United do not have a great deal of money to spend this month, having gone over their allotted budget last summer.

Leicester Could Dig In Their Heels To Keep The Belgian

Clubs in Leicester’s position with regards to Tielemans adopt different positions. 

Some reason that they may as well cash in on a player who would otherwise depart on a free transfer a few months later. 

Others conclude that it is more worthwhile for them to retain the player for the remainder of the season rather than accepting a reduced fee in January.

It is unclear which category Leicester belong in, but Rodgers will almost certainly be petitioning the board to keep hold of Tielemans. 

The Belgium international is still one of Leicester’s best players and given that the Foxes are not completely out of the Premier League relegation battle yet, selling him in this window would represent something of a risk.
