Liverpool are now in need of a new captain and betting sites have replacement odds at the ready, as current skipper Jordan Henderson has agreed a move away from the club.

Henderson has been the Reds captain for eight years after he took over the armband from Steven Gerrard, but he has now reunited with the Liverpool legend at Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq.

Gerrard was appointed as the team's manager in early July, and he was very keen to bring 33-year-old midfielder Henderson over to the Middle East.

The England star was expected to make an imminent decision on his future this week, and Henderson confirmed in an emotional Instagram post on July 26 that he is leaving Liverpool before the start of the new season.

His departure (which the club confirmed officially a day later) represents a changing of the guard at Anfield - just over a month after vice-captain James Milner left for Brighton.

The Reds are around 8/1 in the Premier League odds to win the title next season, and the choice of captain could be a vital part of a title push.

Liverpool defenders Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson are among the favourites to take over the captaincy now that Henderson has headed out the exit door.

But if manger Jurgen Klopp is looking for a player to lead the side for another eight years or so, then he may opt for 24-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Despite the loss of Henderson and the departure of Milner, Klopp has no shortage of international experience at his hands, which could provide a tricky problem when deciding the club's next skipper.

Virgil Van Dijk: A Strong Contender For Next Liverpool Captain

Virgil van Dijk looks to be the obvious choice to take over from Henderson having regularly had the armband when the former Sunderland star and Milner weren't on the pitch for Liverpool last season.

The Dutch defender, who also captains his country, is 1/2 favourite on football betting sites to be named the new Liverpool captain.

Van Dijk also captained the Reds in Henderson's absence as they drew 4-4 with Greuther Furth away from home in their most recent pre-season friendly, further fuelling the fire that he could take over the Liverpool armband.

However, if Klopp is thinking more long term then Van Dijk's age could go against him. He turned 32 on July 8, and is unlikely to be a mainstay in the Liverpool side for much longer than a few years.

But it was a poor season (for Liverpool's standards) last time out, with the Reds finishing fifth.

It was their first voyage outside the top four since the 2015-16 campaign, and if Klopp wants to steady the ship this time around then Van Dijk could be his man.

Homegrown Hope: Trent Alexander-Arnold's Chances Of Being The Next Liverpool Captain

If Klopp is thinking more to the future, then he could do far worse than give local lad Trent Alexander-Arnold the nod as Liverpool captain.

The England star is 2/1 second favourite on betting apps to be the next Reds skipper.

While he is only 24, he has won everything he can at club level after making a huge impression ever since he made his Liverpool debut in 2016, and he even recently wowed in a midfield role for England.

Be it in the middle of the park or at right-back, Alexander-Arnold is no doubt assured of a place in Klopp's 2023-24 team and he could be favourable captain choice with the Anfield faithful.

Betting On Liverpool's Next Captain: Andrew Robertson Emerges As Top Contender

Another Liverpool defender who will definitely be in the conversation is Andrew Robertson

Like Van Dijk, Robertson has also captained his country (Scotland) and he has now spent six seasons at Anfield.

Andrew Robertson

The left-back is the 5/2 third favourite on new betting sites to be handed the armband, and it would be a solid choice for Klopp, as Robertson has proved himself as one of the best left backs in the League since he arrived from Hull City in 2017.

Despite this, fellow left-back Kostas Tsimikas will no doubt be pushing him for a starting place in the forthcoming campaign.

Why Alisson Becker Is A Prominent Figure In The Next Liverpool Captain Odds

Liverpool's number one Alisson Becker is also expected to be in with a shout of landing the captaincy.

The Brazil stopper is 4/1 to take on the honour, which would see him follow in the footsteps of the likes of club legends Sir Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, and John Barnes.

While Alisson certainly has the experience for the role, he, like Van Dijk, is in his 30s and turns 31 in October, so age might even count against if Klopp is thinking of giving youth a chance.

Mohamed Salah's Leadership Potential: A Strong Bet For The Liverpool Captaincy

While the new captain frontrunners, Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson and Alisson were said to be part of a five-man leadership group at Anfield, alongside the now-departed Henderson, star man Mohamed Salah may be joining those ranks soon if Henderson departs.

Salah once again proved himself on the pitch last season, hitting 19 goals in 38 Premier League appearances, and the 31-year-old star has plenty of leadership experience from captaining Egypt.

He is 5/1 to be the next Liverpool skipper, but Klopp may prefer Salah to concentrate on putting the ball in the back of the net and be competing for the Premier League’s Golden Boot

Decoding The Prospects: Who's In The Running To Be Liverpool's Next Captain

Joe Gomez

Like Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez could be in Klopp's mind if the German manager is looking to appoint a skipper for years to come.

Gomez is the best of the rest at 11/1 in the Next Liverpool Captain market, but there are some question marks.

He has big competition from the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip for the right to line up alongside Van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool's defence.

Gomez also doesn't possess as much experience as some of the favourites, including making 90 fewer Premier League appearances than Alexander-Arnold.

Matip may also be in the conversation. The 14/1 shot has been at Anfield since 2016, but has only made more than 30 Premier League appearances once, in the 2021-22 season, and it looks unlikely he could be promoted to club captain.

Another star who might have an outside chance of being handed the armband is Diogo Jota, who is 25/1

The 26-year-old forward could be approaching his prime in a Reds shirt, but there seems to be a fair few in front of him in the captaincy queue for now.

New signing Dominik Szoboszlai is another who has skippered his country, Hungary, but it would be a huge surprise if the 22-year-old midfielder came in as captain above the likes of Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, and favourite Van Dijk.
