Wells Fargo Championship Betting Tips: 3 Each-Way Plays At Quail Hollow
Wells Fargo Betting Predictions:
- Wyndham Clark To Win (Each-Way) - 16/1 With Bet365
- Cameron Young To Win (Each-Way - 28/1 With Unibet
- Max Homa To Win (Each-Way) - 22/1 With BetMGM
Most of the world’s best players are gathering at Quail Hollow for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship and it’s no surprise to see Rory McIlroy installed as the 15/2 favourite with betting sites to win the tournament for a fourth time.
McIlroy’s first PGA Tour triumph came at this course in 2010 which he repeated in 2015 and again three years ago, and his chances have been boosted by the absence of both Ludvig Aberg and world number one Scottie Scheffler, whose wife is close to giving birth to their first child.
Length is an advantage at this classical, tree-lined par-71 course which measures a whopping 7,558 yards, but the stats tell us that scrambling and approach have also featured prominently amongst recent champions.
There have been three 500/1 winners in the last 11 years, but this tournament is now classified as a Signature Event with 69 players and no cut, and with the US PGA Championship just a week away, an elite player is more likely than not to be lifting the trophy on Sunday night.
Clark Title Defence Looks Promising
Last year, Wyndham Clark claimed his first PGA Tour title here with an impressive four-shot victory over Xander Schauffele and six weeks later he won the US Open, so this tournament certainly has special memories for the 30-year-old from Denver.
Scheffler wasn’t in the field 12 months ago either, so perhaps the stars are aligning for a player bidding to become the first player to make a successful title defence at Quail Hollow which underwent a redesign in 2016 in preparation for the US PGA Championship a year later.
Clark is one of the biggest hitters in the game and his Strokes Gained metrics for approach are pretty tidy too, both of which should benefit him enormously at a course where taming the par-fives will be crucial.
The American went round the long holes in -10 last year and he is likely to target seven, 10 and 15 once again and show his customary patience for the closing stretch – otherwise known as the Green Mile.
Clark was runner-up to Scheffler at Bay Hill and Sawgrass recently, so the absence of the US Masters champion can only be viewed positively, and a third-place finish at the Heritage in his last outing suggests he is knocking on the door.
Bet365 are the pick of the golf betting sites offering 16/1 on Clark as the first of our Wells Fargo Championship predictions and are paying 1/4 odds on five places.
Young At Heart Of The Action
Cameron Young has yet to win on the PGA Tour, yet has proved his liking for difficult courses by posting five top-10s in his last eight major appearances.
Young can be forgiven for a mediocre showing at Harbour Town in his previous appearance, having finished ninth at Augusta a week earlier – his fifth top 10 of the year.
The American enjoyed a spectacular debut on his Wells Fargo debut two years ago when he finished runner-up to Max Homa and as one of the best ball-strikers on the planet - as his strokes gained: tee to green and approach metrics show - he should be in the mix on Sunday.
The negative aspect of Young’s game comes to the fore once he’s found the green and as things stand he ranks 125th for strokes gained: putting, an improvement on last year!
Young’s flatstick was pretty cold at The Heritage, but encouragingly he gained strokes on the field at the US Masters in the previous week, so we’ll take encouragement from that performance.
Golf betting sites such as Unibet have priced Young at 28/1 to end his PGA Tour drought and with a bit of luck on the greens that is surely not too far away.
Max Factor Hard To Ignore
McIlroy is not the only multiple champions appearing at Quail Hollow this week.
Homa bagged his first PGA Tour title here in 2019 and as we mentioned earlier, won by two shots from Young, Keegan Bradley and Matt Fitzpatrick three years later.
Interestingly, Homa won the Fortinet Championship for a second time in 2022, so he seems to like particular courses, including Quail Hollow where he finished eighth last season.
After his 2019 success, Homa said: “A course like this sets up great for me: a lot of seven irons, eight irons in, drive it in the fairway. So I’m not really that surprised…I was waiting for this to happen.”
Homa, like Young, had an excellent US Masters (T3) and was threatening the top 10 at Hilton Head after a third-round 66, but ran out of gas and a closing 75 wrecked his chances.
Now that he’s refreshed and without Scheffler and Aberg to compete against, Homa can take his opportunity in what remains a stellar field.
Homa has won at least twice in each of the last three years (he won the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour in November) and this looks an ideal place to start a new run of victories.
Despite an average start to the season, Homa has finished in the top 20 in half of his 10 events, including eighth at Bay Hill, and it should only be a matter of time before this class act returns to the winner’s circle.
With that in mind, we’re on board each-way at 22/1 with BetMGM as the last of our Wells Fargo Championship predictions.
