If you look at futures betting odds, you’ll find many races that are a bit one or two-sided, but that’s not the case with the American League Cy Young award.

There are multiple players with AL Cy Young odds less than +1000, meaning this should be a hotly-contested race all season.

Now that we’re more than 60 games through the season, let’s look at these MLB Cy Young odds to see who we think might pull it off come the season’s end.

Favorites for the 2023 AL Cy Young Award

Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays

Pitching Stats: 9-1, 2.02 ERA, 75.2 IP, 87 Ks, 29 Walks.

Odds: DraftKings Sportsbook  (+300)

Leading the way is Rays' lefty ace Shane McClanahan. Along with his impressive nine wins, he has an incredibly low ERA of just 2.02. This ERA comes even with a bad showing on May 13 against the New York Yankees, when he gave up four earned runs.

The lefty has respectable strikeout and innings numbers. Still, the following players on this list will have better stats than him in those categories.

The Rays are in first place in the AL East by 5.5 games, so you couple his wins, K/9 over 10, and ERA at around 2.00; McClanahan might be difficult to slow down unless the wheels fall off this pitching wagon.

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees

Pitching Stats: 7-0, 2.82 ERA, 79.2 IP, 84 Ks, 28 Walks.

Odds: FanDuel Sportsbook (+600)

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has that glimmering “0” in the loss column. Although we mentioned McClanahan’s wins, these numbers can often represent the team around you. That said, it appears, based on the odds, that’s what is helping Cole over the third player on this list.

If you look at every other statistic beyond wins and losses, Kevin Gausman (spoiler alert) performs better than Cole.

Cole is still an excellent pitcher, but those losses are bound to happen at some point, which could diminish Cole’s value.

Kevin Gausman, Toronto Blue Jays

Pitching Stats: 5-3, 2.63 ERA, 82 IP, 113 Ks, 18 Walks.

Odds: Caesars Sportsbook (+700)

If I’m betting on another pitcher not named McClanahan, it’s Gausman. Yes, he has the three losses. And yes, two of those losses were on him (one game with seven earned runs and the other with eight), but in his third loss, he was spotless through six innings and still got the loss.

Gausman has a lower ERA than Cole, plenty more strikeouts than Cole and McClanahan, and fewer walks.

The Blue Jays are 9.5 games out of first place in the AL East, but if something happens to McClanahan, expect Gausman to shoot up every “Al Cy Young odds 2023” MLB setting sites board around the country.

It’s always a good idea to bet on a strikeout-based pitcher who also doesn’t walk a lot of batters.
