National League 2023 Cy Young Odds, Predictions, Picks & Best Bets
Of all the player awards, the NL Cy Young odds have seen quite a bit of shake-up since we last checked in two weeks ago, including the odds-on favorite dropping close to +1000 and more.
Below, we’ll check the MLB betting odds to see where National League Cy Young leaders stand as we venture into July, a pivotal month for the season, including the All-Star Break and Trade Deadline.
Favorites for the 2023 NL Cy Young Award
Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks
6/8/23 Pitching Stats: 7-2, 2.75 ERA, 78.2 IP, 88 Ks, 17 Walks.
6/8/23 Odds: FanDuel Sportsbook (+250)
6/22/23 Pitching Stats: 9-2, 2.84 ERA, 98.1 IP, 104 Ks, 20 Walks
6/22/23 Odds: FanDuel Sportsbook (+190)
Overtaking the No. 1 spot in the futures odds to win the NL Cy Young is Diamondbacks righty, Zac Gallen. Since we checked in two weeks ago, Gallen has made three starts.
His last two starts saw him go seven innings and give up just one run, but his June 11 start — at the Detroit Tigers of all teams — resulted in him surrendering five earned runs on ten hits.
Gallen has picked up two wins over the last two weeks while his ERA has increased slightly. Minus the five-run outburst from the Tigers, Gallen has remained steady.
There’s not much to look at other than staying consistent and improving in back-to-back stars following a shelling against a now 32-41 ball team.
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers
6/8/23 Pitching Stats: 7-4, 3.25 ERA, 69.1 IP, 84 Ks, 17 Walks.
6/8/23 Odds: Caesars Sportsbook (+1000)
6/22/23 Pitching Stats: 9-4, 2.72 ERA, 89.1 IP, 103 Ks, 23 Walks
6/22/23 Odds: Caesars Sportsbook (+400)
Compared to Gallen, Kershaw leaps out as someone to potentially wager on. From +1000 to +400, Kershaw has been excellent since we last checked in.
He made a start on June 8 (when we last checked), and he’s only given up two earned runs over his last three. The two earned runs came in one game against the Chicago White Sox, but other than that, he’s blanked the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels.
Notably, Kershaw has dropped his ERA by more than .050 points and is now over 100 strikeouts.
The 35-year-old veteran doesn’t seem to age. He’d be an excellent wager right now. Still, it’s also important to note that the teams he’s dominated recently aren’t exactly the cream of the crop offensively.
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies
6/22/23 Pitching Stats: 6-4, 3.48 ERA, 88 IP, 98 Ks, 20 Walks
6/22/23 Odds: DraftKings Sportsbook (+700)
Making his top-three debut in the NL Cy Young odds is Phillies righty, Zack Wheeler. The former New York Met doesn’t have the best win-loss record, nor do the Phillies, who are just two games above .500 at 38-36.
Despite his third-placing charting here, some sportsbooks have the next player on our list tied with him, so it’s closer than you might think.
Wheeler has a sub-3.50 ERA, which is OK, but he doesn’t stand out in many other departments besides his low walk rate.
Wheeler has been solid, but the value is limited here.
Spencer Strider, Atlanta Braves
6/8/23 Pitching Stats: 6-2, 2.97 ERA, 69.2 IP, 113 Ks, 26 Walks.
6/8/23 Odds: DraftKings Sportsbook (+175)
6/22/23 Pitching Stats: 8-2, 3.93 ERA, 84.2 IP, 136 Ks, 30 Walks
6/22/23 Odds: DraftKings Sportsbook (+900)
Strider was the odds-on sports betting favorite two weeks ago to win the award, but over his last three starts, he’s been beaten up.
Strider also made a start on June 8, and in that game, he allowed eight earned runs over four innings while still striking out eight.
Following that start, he allowed another five earned runs.
He did calm down in his June 20 start against the Phillies, picking up the win while going six innings, allowing just one earned run, and nine strikeouts, but did allow eight hits.
Over his last three starts, Strider has allowed 23 hits, which is quite a lot, including five home runs.
As you can see from the stats above, his ERA has ballooned by almost an entire point, but he still leads the league in strikeouts.
If Strider can get things under control, he has the strikeout potential to climb back into this race.
There’s more value here on Strider than Wheeler.
